re: Looks like AI may be sucking the blood out of Wikipedia

Rick Beato has a new YouTube video where he tests various AI programs with a math teaser. They often screw up what his 9 year old son can do.
He showed charts of where the various AI programs get their info.
Chat GPT couldn't do shite without sucking info from Wikipedia and Reddit. Scary.

Cool. Wiki has become pretty far left anyway.

Revenge for putting Encyclopedia Brittanica and World Book out of business.

There’s no AI rabbit holes like Wikipedia can lead you on

You're typing on a device... you are a product too... we all are. I'd rather it not be that way- but it simply IS that way. Even if you "pay" for a product, service or subscription.

Lol if you don't think that is coming

of course it's coming... and something else will displace it.. like blockbuster, redbox and streaming... or video killing the radio star.. or wiki killing the analog encyclopedia. Such is the way of all things.

That was a great video all around. It should be its own thread.

What happens when AI no longer finds those sources it once had because a website it referenced is no longer online.
Will AI start referencing itself?
Damn good question!

I think you’ll soon start seeing groups like 4 Chan peppering the internet with coordinated fake primary sources to create ridiculous stories for the bot trawlers.
It seems you just need to create an AI alter ego to start the peer review web, and then it’s off to the races.
“Meat expert José Manuel Lorenzo, 46, is the researcher who has published the most scientific studies in Spain. He put his name on 176 papers last year”
“At one point, Lorenzo began collaborating with exotic researchers — who nobody knew about — on topics that have nothing to do with meat. Four months ago, he published a study on the hospital management of monkeypox, alongside Iraqi, Indian and Pakistani co-authors. And a year ago, he and some researchers from India and Saudi Arabia published an article on the treatment of gum disease with bee venom. In a telephone conversation with EL PAÍS, Lorenzo admits that he doesn’t know any of these co-authors in person, nor is he an expert on any of these issues.“

Right. It just drives up your utility bill without your permission.

That is why news websites and other digital archives need to be archived. Because what happens once Newspapers that were printed are now totally online and no longer in print or websites go offline when a paper is shuttered.
A woman in the 70s was ahead of you on this thought.

I remember Rush Limbaugh talking about the same thing with the drive by media back in the 1980’s and 90’s, but all it took was a fax machine and a fancy letterhead faxed to the news media from some obscure XYZ institution.
Sometimes the media would report what was on these faxes as the Gospel no matter how extreme the view was.

Almost nobody asks why there isn't an option to subscribe to FB, IG, anything else for a couple of bucks to not be tracked. It's because your data is more valuable in aggregate than you paying them $100 a year.
You see the brand obsession, even with dudes who think they're immune, all over TD, and it was generated by social media tracking. All Cats are the only pants I wear to work, etc.

It always pisses me off that they would beg for money like a god damn mega church preacher instead of putting some very tiny text based unintrusive ads on the site.
