Our 2nd house (in Ohio) had AC installed in the early 60s/late 50s. I didn't know it was that old. Had it serviced (fan motor IIRC) and the tech freaked out. "It's semi-hermetic!!". Compressor looks like it weighed a ton. Was still running strong when we moved back to LA.

I just want to know if you were a millionaire before or after 30. We’ve already established all tradesmen are rich, I’m just focused on timeline

I am a partner in an hvac company.
We’re up significantly from last year.
Most of our calls are on units less than 10 yrs old. Living by the gulf helps (salty air).
Plus, nobody knows how to fix things any longer.

Home services (plumbing, hvac, electrical, lawn) are the way to go.

If you are like 35, his career outlook is better than yours. I say that as a fellow white collar guy.

Agree 100%. HVAC systems used to last 20-30 years. Now u r lucky to get 6 to 7 years out of them. And don’t even get me started on the shitty coils.

I had a a 1987 Rheem unit that I milked as long as possible until about 2021. It was still blowing great when I replaced it because couldn’t get Freon.

Agree!! Trump needs to make A/C great again

Maybe he'll undo the the AIM act he signed into law in 2020 which brought us the new mandates for r454 and r32.

People blame the EPA but they didn't make it a law. They are just tasked with enforcing it.

I read several of the official letters sent in support of the AIM act. Every one I read from a HVAC manufacturer basically said they support it because it will help us "keep up with advancing technology" and "create new jobs".

I guess create new jobs replacing and repairing the shite.....

On a related note, I have a 50 year old refrigerator in the garage that's still keeping my beer ice cold.

I bought a 4 ton, a 3 ton and 2 ton for my house last October.
I changed out everything inside and out.
Total cost: $30,000
All Rheem. I run them all day and they’re 3-5 dollars less a day than the old ones.

Write this down: HVAC-as-a-service is the model of the future. Nobody cares about the unit; they pay for cold air to come out of their vents. Just like internet; you pay for connectivity, not a modem.

A few years ago this would have sounded absurd, but you’re probably right. It seems like every industry took it to heart when that German fricker told us “you will own nothing and you will be happy.”

Just rent a house if that is your position.

I'm not sure how we can argue that the trades vs accountants have better career prospects. It will be the new reality at some point. We'll still have accountants, just like 70% less of them. Same for my job I suspect

My POS trane breaks every year. I’m going to replace it soon because it’s such a raging piece of shite and I’m sick of it. Trane is also one of the shittiest companies I’ve ever dealt with. I’m looking forward to the day that I get to remove this piece of crap and never give them another penny or anyone who sells this shite.

I fed ChatGPT my finances for the month of June I just wanted to see its capability for the most part and I think you are correct about this. The future is definitely in labor.

We have a 5 ton which is a little over sized for our home but runs efficient as frick. I get it serviced twice a year in hopes that my expenditure will increase the life of the equipment. I had to replace the blower/furnace/coil a couple years ago (got about 8 years out of it) to the tune of about 3K.

This thread also reminded me of my discovery of communal heat. In Russia and china (that I know of) every house is town is connected to steam generated by one source, which is controlled by the govt. Apparently they won't turn on the steam until there's 10 consecutive days below 45 degrees. Thought that was wild. While having to service shite sucks, at least we don't have to deal with the govt regulating AC...yet.
