The tips are still taxable to the recipient.

Illegal or against the credit card policy?

Or maybe EBT in your case. Either way, put a $20 bill in your Pocket if you want to pay for a fast food lunch.
You're so fricking stupid, you don't know how fricking stupid you are.
The amount of money doesn't change.. cash vs debit/credit.

how would it be illegal?
Read the quoted part of my last post. They can’t charge more than 4%.
Feel free to read more: LINK
I don’t think it would fit under convenience fee either.

And yet you’re too fricking stupid to realize I’ve never mentioned anything of the sort.
Now frickoff.

I have some renters who pay in cash. I'll let that add up and use it when I need to buy something I can barter for. You would be surprised how much you can get knocked off by paying cash for stuff like appliances.

Have we established it’s a flat $4 fee or is that what the OP claims HE got charged?
I heard that they are weird about accepting credit cards so I have never been there. Sounds trashy AF.
I am basing this on numerous posts to facebook about it on the Watson FB drama page. About once a month there's somebody complaining about it.

You are correct. At the very least, it is still a violation of Mastercard TOS.
My title was about debit/PIN transactions because they're dirt cheap and it's stupid to act like they're a burden to a business when in reality they are a net positive.

Businesses like this probably use a 2nd register at times to ring up some cash sales that do not get reported for tax purposes at any level, so unethically adding on a fee well above what they are probably charged wouldn’t surprise me.
I am surprised true transaction fees are still so high, but a flat $4 added charge for a place like this is a scam.

Small town ignorance at its finest.
And they embrace the “we don’t need your fancy modern technology or ideas” attitude.
Greasy, salty chicken. Price gouging since Covid. Now this.
You know better than to talk to me like that when I’m hurting’ Linda.

The person that posted it to FB changed it from $4 to 4% which is a significant difference and not nearly as bad. Still shady.

4% is the new norm or so it seems. I don’t know why businesses do this.
Posted on 12/28/22 at 10:05 pm to dallastigers
I use cash if I think I'm at a questionable business (and don't want to hassle with someone stealing cc information) but generally prefer credit cards because of the cumulative rewards and because I prefer not to carry large amounts of cash.
Reading through the responses that seemed angry at people using debit or credit cards surprised me. I wonder how much of this was about tax evasion? That seems like a Louisiana kind of root issue.

quote:The way to do it, IMHO, is like a BBQ joint up in Mississippi that I visit occasionally. They have their prices listed, and they offer a 4% discount off those prices if you're paying cash.
I heard that they are weird about accepting credit cards
For me, it's not worth peeling out greenbacks for what is, effectively, a 2% discount on a $15 meal. I get 2% cashback from Visa, so it costs me 30 cents to use a credit card vs. cash. One person, one meal, I'm sticking with plastic. Obviously, if I were buying for a larger group, I'd give 'em cash and be happy to do it.
I would guess the "cash discount" is how that place gets around cardholder agreements re: passing on costs to customers. It at least feels better psychologically. However, that place is dealing in percentages, while Linda's is apparently charging a flat $4 for all credit card transactions. In theory, I could buy one of their milkshakes for $5, add on 10% in sales tax, another $4 in their credit card charge, and end up spending $9.50. That's ducking insane.

So it’s all based on a FB post
That’s already changing the story? So much for “this is illegal”! And if it’s shady, there’s a
Metric shite ton of retailers charging “shady”’fees.
You know how you avoid this? Pay in cash.

It's against the TOS of Mastercard and possibly others.

Tax evasion is indeed illegal. There's no other explanation for pushing away customers like that.
Why doesn't Raisin' Canes have a surcharge for credit and debit? How ever do they survive with those mean credit card companies?
eta: yes, it's all based on a FB post.
