Would seem to me they’re ripe for a holdup if word gets around they have mostly cash on hand.

Your address is generally related to the closest post office.
True story: Linda's current location sits in the shadow of the Watson Post Office. Everything up here has Denham Springs addresses, though--except for the P.O. Boxes physically located inside the Watson USPS. And, last time I checked, they had a waiting list for those.

I looked at their menu. They are extremely proud of their food.

Yes. Far too proud. I have been going to Linda’s for 20 years. Really like the chicken, onion rings, and fried okra. They also have the elusive chocolate soft serve ice cream. (Roaches, meh.)

However, the prices increased insanely (Covid, employee shortage, supply chain, inflation, blah blah) in the past year or so. More than most other things AND they tacked on the credit card charge AND you wait 20 minutes for your meal in the drive thru almost every time. That’s three strikes for me. So…adios, Linda’s.

ETA: the big talk in Watson the past couple of days has been that they charged the fee to some cash customers. The manager hotly denies, but who can say. Easy answer…don’t go.

What I don’t understand about businesses complaining about card transaction fees is that have they calculated the cost of doing business with cash. Cash has to be counted and verified, cash then needs to be delivered to the bank for deposit, enough change in 5’s, 1’s, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies needs to be taken out to cover a weekend when banks are closed. All that adds to a business’s labor cost or even straight up fees if they get an armored car like Loomis to pickup and deliver your cash needs. Also, with that much cash in your business, that puts you at risk for a robbery.

Almost as bad as people who pay for a pack of gum with a credit card.

Visa has rules against surcharging customers for debit purchases. It's only allowed on credit cards, and with very specific rules. I'm betting $4 is much higher than what Visa allows, even if they were applying it to only credit cards.

I pay for everything with a check. And I will balance my book before I leave the register.

How much can a business charge for using a credit card? When a business chooses to impose a credit card surcharge, there are protocols that have to be followed. For one, the business has to notify the appropriate credit card associations and clearly disclose that it charges a fee for the use of a credit card. Credit card surcharges can’t exceed the cost of accepting the card or four percent, whichever is the lowest amount, even if it costs the business over that amount to process your credit card payment.

So if they actually pay less than 4% to the credit card company, what they are doing is illegal.

Maybe they are not very ambitious and don't mind losing money.

Credit card processing companies have created this problem along with stupid lazy business owners who take the first rate offered.

Just realized the OP said they charge a flat fee, not a percentage. I would bet decent money that is illegal, due to what I posted above, this part:

So unless every transaction is over $100, what they’re doing is illegal.

I had some work done on my wife's car a few years ago and only had a credit card on me to pay. They charged me like 3% on 2k to pay with a credit card.

NVM, just saw your edit.

Have we established it’s a flat $4 fee or is that what the OP claims HE got charged?
