If data brokers can track the devices you take with you, they know where you live, where you go, and what you do. And the stakes are only poised to climb higher, now that surveillance companies that sell automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) are getting in on the game. Defense contractor Leonardo is promoting a new technology called SignalTrace that will package plate cameras with sensors that can scrape unique identifiers tied to your smart devices and make that data available to law enforcement.

A recent report by 404 Media dives into the objective of SignalTrace and how it’s being marketed to authorities. Police, border security, and other government agencies already comprise Leonardo’s customer base, and with this technology, those clients seek to correlate footage from these cameras to phones, tablets, wearables, AirTags, and, naturally, the electronics inside cars themselves.

The goal here, as 404 sums up, is to “bridge the gap between vehicle and occupant.” Previously, these cameras could track a car’s whereabouts at a given time. Throw in a glut of unique identifiers, though, and the job of tying an individual or multiple people to that vehicle becomes trivial—and not something anyone can simply opt out of.

You don't have anything to worry about if you're not doing anything wrong.

Can you imagine trying to commit a crime in the future?

I was just looking at Amazon deals and saw they have their smart glasses on sale from $400 to $99 today, and thinking that they either can't sell them or are selling them at a loss to outsell the Meta glasses because the data is more valuable

I guarantee this doesn’t work as well as they are advertising.

So, constitutionally speaking, your license plate is technically owned by the state. So in some ways alprs are simply tracking that "asset". I don't necessarily like it, but I can see the justification.

However, my phone and any other personal electronic devices are owned by me. Extracting information from those, to me, would raise serious 4th amendment questions.

Just unplugged my toaster. Nobody, and I mean nobody, will track my carb intake.

And that includes me.

Probably a bit of both. The data is so valuable. It's why apps like Waze are free. They track you and sell population data. If you leave the app open (and maybe even if closed) it'll know what everywhere you went, how long you stayed there, etc. Or in Waze's case, Google can get better at targeted ads as they own the app.

Louisiana isn't switching to QR codes instead of inspection stickers to benefit the people.

You laugh, but they have a "smart" appliance version of everything that connects to wifi. The future is literally these things monitoring and tracking us.

Yeah, you own the device, but you agree to the ToS that allows them to do with your data as they please. Not only the ToS of your provider, but every single app you download allows them to whore out your data.

If you think some pajeet IT person hasn't seen those nude photos of your wife you took, you are naive.

Can anyone explain why this is something anyone right or left should be in favor of?
