I just told a good friend to frick off several months back because of his gambling problem. I told him I didn’t want to have anything to do with it a long time ago. He asked for a bunch of money for his now wife. I was skeptical. He asked for more 2 times in the next 5 days. This crap went back and forth for a month until I had enough of him asking for money. Blocked his number. Got out only down 175

Gambling addiction is the worst because it financially drains everyone around you. I’ve heard horror stories about this and wanted no part of it

Correct. In fact, there are some bookies who will be taking a hit once the apps go live.

Access to gambling will go up 1000 fold. I don’t where to find a bookie if I wanted to

I agree with OP 100%, the people who can least afford it will be the first to fall victim.

People are right when you say there's always been access to gambling. But heretofore you had to be proactive and look for it. This will bring it to people with a few touches of their phone screen, and it will be pushed hard; it already is. Marketing and advertising works. If it didn't, businesses of all kinds wouldn't spend billions of dollars on it. This Will bring in people who have never gambled before, and will turn others from occasional bettors to heavy bettors. Some, perhaps many, in both these groups will become problem gamblers.

It's legal now, but as I said before, let's be honest about what we voted for.

I find it especially unsettling that LSU would partner with a sports book. With as much revenue as LSU is raking in, they should be more discerning about whom they associate their brand image with.

This is 5 pages down so many probably will not see it. I understand your concern but I think it’s important to point out that people have had access to cash very easily lately. What I’m about to describe has been happening for 2+ years now…

1) Open brokerage account
2) Receive offer in the mail from Citi, Chase, BOA, etc.. for a $10,000 cash advance with 0% APR for 18 months.
3) Fill out the form and get bank approval.
4) YOLO that money on options, on a 3x levered ETF… or Smile Direct Club.
5) Go on Reddit and say and repeat… “Too the Moon!! To the Moon!”
6) Think of personalized plates for your new Lambo
7) Believe in rainbows and unicorns.
8) Find out that rainbows are real…but unicorns aren’t.
9) Come to terms with the fact that you’ll be eating Ramen noodles.

… but some how we all just keep moving forward.
… it’s gonna be alright. :)

OP
The only thing you control in your life is yourself and the choices you make.
Worry about you and let everyone else worry about themselves.

This isn’t like smoking. It destroys families and relationships in ways that other addictions can’t

why can't they use their prerogative to keep corporate bookmakers off people's phones?
Because they're private companies that can do what they want when it's legal - don't like it? Don't buy their product. Me, I'm all for sports gambling. If you can't control yourself around it then stay away - there are apps, therapists, and support groups out there that can help you do just that. A million people shouldn't suffer because 100 people have issues - same thing goes with alcohol. That stuff literally kills people and nearly ruined my life, but I got sober over two and half years ago through AA. Do you see me advocating for the return of prohibition? Nope.

I think this will benefit degenerate gamblers like myself. Beforehand, we had to eat shitty odds set by local bookies with few betting options. Now, we can increase the probability of winning based on bets not allowed beforehand.

I am sure there are a lot of people who have been suffering because of their inability to legally bet on sports.

BTW, I don't care about the betting one way or the other. I just found this statement a bit over the top.

I don't think the OP is wrong, but as with tobacco and alcohol, it is up to the adult to be legally responsible.
