Pretty cool short video on the techniques that go into training the people who pilot the biggest boats in the world.

You know the right people to get in on those jobs?
Posted on 9/5/16 at 4:06 pm to MC5601
I hear it's a hell of a sweet gig. Too bad basically the only way to get that job is to be born into it.

It's a government built and government protected industry. It's insane the amount of money these guys make.

my dad had a chance pre 1958 to become a pilot after he got his license...he had a good career with Freeport Sulphur but I wonder how much different my life would have been if he did...
we have simulators up here in Vicksburg that can imitate any port in the US

Yeah, cruise ships have to have them on the inland passages around here. It's a racket.

My late wife's dad and now her brother are pilots for NOBRA. It's one hell of a job.

Can someone explain the politics behind getting on of these jobs?
Posted on 9/5/16 at 5:14 pm to Jizzy08
How much does the Bar pilots lobby donate every year to keep the legislature from opening it up.

1. Find a river pilot.
2. Does said pilot have daughters?
a. If no, find a different pilot.
b. If yes, get the daughter pregnant.
3. Explain to her dad that in order to support the daughter in the lifestyle to which she's accustomed, you need a job.

Well you still have to graduate from a maritime academy before you can even think about the other steps.

my dad was a lot of good things, but he admitted later in life that he was too proud to do the fraternity pledge types of things that an apprentice pilot would have to do (fraternity pledge is my description, not his)
becoming a river pilot in the 1950s was not as limited a group as it is today

Our neighbor somehow sued based on nepotism in the early 90s and got a job.
