Hawsepiping has been all but phased out in Nola. They want new pilots to have maritime degrees

The shipping companies pass that cost on to the company shipping the goods who in turn factor it into the selling price of the goods, so the answer is anyone that buys anything shipped to the U.S. should care.

I can name you 2 former State Reps whose sons did not have that degree. And, as well as getting highly paid, their hours are off the chart, i.e. they do not come close to a 49 work week. It is nepotism/politics at its absolute worst.

My history of drug abuse notwithstanding, I'd have made a great sea captain. Plus on the open seas, you can get ripped to the tits and who gives a frick. I missed my calling.

Yeah, um, you watch too much TV. If a capt gets caught smoking dope on the boat his arse will go to jail with the quickness. The Coast Guard doesn't frick around with that shite.

Before the college degree requirement there was a apprentice program, the representative's sons didn't just walk off the street and immediately be river pilots. Just to eligible to take the required coast guard exam requires 720 days of actual sea time, not just time on the job working on vessels of the required tonnage, it takes several years just to get to that point.
