Takes about 10 years of training and education to become a river pilot.
Current requirements to be a river pilot from the Associated Branch Pilots web site

Earned an undergraduate degree
•Minimum one-year at sea on ocean going vessel
•Obtained a USCG first class Pilot license
•Served several years in the Bar Pilot apprentice training program
•Completed nearly 1,000 trips with a State Commissioned Bar Pilot along the waterways we serve.
"This means that before becoming a Louisiana State Commissioned Bar Pilot, an individual must dedicate almost a decade of education and training."

It's still a very mafias type of group. And yes I know about one of those politician sons who is a pilot. Probably the only gay one in the lower Mississippi. LOL

How many of those jobs are there roughly? I mean are you talking 30, 300? Just curious. I figured some of those guys do well, but that's pretty absurd.

Sorry to be exact its now 435,344. Thats low compared to what the guys make in the houston ship channel and NY Harbor.

Not many. It's very difficult to get a license allowing you to work aboard any size vessel. Tonnage matters. It will influence pay grade, as will area of responsibility. Tankers generally run a crew of about 15, including kitchen and medical. The highest paid are the officers on board. I'm not going to go into detail about salary, I'll just say that as a Third Mate, the lowest ranking officer onboard, I was paid well. Even by OT standards. My schedule was usually three months on, three off. I left that life about two years ago when my wife became pregnant with our first child.

Congratulations. I miss the water. What industry are you hoping for? Obviously maritime but, O&G? Tankers?
If I went back I would go to Alaska aboard a hover craft with a 6/6 rotation delivering fuel and supplies.

Well I briefly worked on OSVs in the gulf but with the way oil is right now, I may need to expand my horizons. I'd say brown water is my first choice, but I'd do blue water if need be.
