Because, our dark skinned law professionals need to sound as fancy as possible.

So if HH passes the bar, will she use this along with her posse of subpar lawyers?

Is this a racial thing only?

Same reason why some people feel the need to have everyone call them doctor in their personal life (I find it more common amongst the PhD crowd). Or boat Captain's always introduce themselves as Captain.

Also grids my gears when people refer to "Attorney _____".

Like, we get it - just ask for Bob. Not "Attorney Bob".

IME it is mainly college profs but that is how students address them. I occasionally eat lunch with some of my old undergrad profs and still call them doctor but after 30 years we are really on a first name basis outside of just greeting them.

As for the honorific "Esquire", it has mainly died out in the last 30 years. When I clerked for a small firm in Durham in the early 90s they all had signature lines with Esq. after their names but did not sign it nor have it on the letterhead, the same for the first law firm I worked for in Charleston. I moved to a mid-sized firm and the older attorneys used it on the signature line but the younger ones didn't. Then I moved to a large multi-state firm in 1996 and esquire left my life forever.

In the past it made more sense, people didn't sign with bar numbers for example. I always found it to be an odd honorific but used it when it was the convention of my firm, in fact, I never made a choice either my secretary used it or they didn't.

How else will family law clients know the attorneys have it out for them because they share the same last name as the opposing attorney...?

Sadly, it's a common complaint...
