I know a Louisiana attorney who specializes in securities law- - she bills $1,000 per hour- - compared to the $3k per hour New York specialist bill

I doubt that you'll fine many, if any. That's big city rates for big city work, and we don't have any.

Most white shoe law firms on Poydras are considered to be doing really well at $500+ an hour depending on the type of client. Even 300 to 400 is great for certain types of work.
Houston and Atlanta would laugh at that. There are some really good lawyers in Nola and they are a bargain comparatively speaking.
I had no idea the market in NOLA was that depressed. I've lived all over the place and it is crazy to me that top white shoe firms in NOLA are only charging 500. Will definitely keep that in mind next time I'm in deep s***.

There are insurance defense firms charging the same hourly rates as diesel mechanics. They are the same people ranting about tort reform on LinkedIn and Facebook.

You have to be nuts to be insurance defense and live in a big city. Given the poor rates versus the cost of living, I don't know why there are any insurance defense people in big cities. If that were my job I'd like in a city no larger than Shreveport.

Yeah I read these rants on td.com about Louisiana lawyers and I just shake my head; they have no idea. My buddies in Texas or Florida laugh at both the hourly rates and the judgments we get down here. It's a pittance to them.
I think La. courts get a bad rap because it's easy to squeeze out a soft tissue $10-15k settlement, and that's the kind of case that's most directly visible to Joe sixpack. But that's nothing in the grand scheme of things.

As of 5-6 years ago the highest wrongful death verdict in the history of the state of Louisiana was I think $6 million bucks. I know there have been some nuclear verdicts that have come down since then, but still. Like you said, it’s really not a big time PI market despite the perception.

Depends on the specialty. There are definitely senior partners who charge clients more than $1,100. Courts are reluctant to award that high on a fee application. They are typically in the $400-600 range for senior partners.
Contingency fees are a different animal. There are cases that attorneys work on and get zero, while on others they may get tens of thousands an hour.

Ask the Catholic Church in New Orleans…
They just spent a few million on a bankruptcy case to settle millions in alterboy touching cases.

I remember about 25-30 years ago Gordon / Arata in New Orleans was charging some of their larger O& G clients upwards of $1000.00 / hr
Quinn Emmanuel in Manhattan charges 3500 -4000 for their time

Some tax lawyer, I'd wager

The most successful attorneys in this state don’t bill by the hour, nor do they measure their success by how much they can scam their insurance clients out of based on an inflated hourly rate.
The real heavyweights are measured by billboard real estate and nuclear verdicts.

The crazier part is some of the top divorce attorneys in cities like Lake Charles charge 350-500. Truly insane in the big picture.

My transactional attorney charges me $700 per hour. He is in NOLA at Jones Walker.

I don't roll out of bed for less than $1500/hr.
