As a couple others have said, they tried this after Katrina, but of course the technology was much different back then.

One of the things that became apparent during COVID here in NOLA area is that there are a LOT of families out there who's only internet access is on a government-funded cell phone. That's a big reason why the whole online learning thing didn't work well.

Chromebooks are cheap as dirt these days. If each kid in NOLA public schools had one, and a decent internet connection at home, this could do a lot of good for learning.

As far as the carriers, I'm sure someone will be paid to provide the service. And the service probably should be somewhat bare-bones, a basic level. If you want something faster, you pay for it.

Paying for it? Can it be ad-supported?

I'd love to hear Latoya attempt to pronounce this word.

I'm in the business and think this is an all time bad idea. The maintenance costs alone would be high as giraffe pussy.

Yeah I’m doing FOA for n41 in Miami atm for small cells.

Great stuff, pretty expensive considering you need L2100 or another LTE anchor to use at the moment.

We are still implementing NSA architecture though. SA should be soon along with the continue rollout of mmWave

Agree 100% with this idea, I think internet access is a necessity, but this is a luxury when we have roads with potholes that swallow cards, a half falling down building downtown, and flooding with a light spring shower.

I can get behind this, most European cities have free WiFi that you can log into. Although it is New Orleans so it will not work half the time and be slow as frick.

WiFi machine broke.

That’s not a bad idea

A better idea would be to fix your pumps and drainage infrastructure first though.

Wasn't that Sprint's original "4G" that had garbage coverage and was slow as shite before they abandoned it and switched to LTE technology that other carriers were rolling out their 4G networks with?

Well considering NOLA is at 2G.....5G is a quantum leap....4G would be impressive.

To combat lag time issues, NOLA citizens will be asked to clean around their local Gateways....

If they do this.
Could access be limited to government sites, schools, designated educational sites, job sites etc?

I don't think taxpayer dollars should be providing internet for people to watch rap videos.

I am pretty sure the city tried this either just before or after Katrina and it failed miserably. Its a great idea but can the city competently pull it off.

Contract it out to Google. Let Google offer the service to those that do not mind having their usage tracked.

I would donate to the cause if the Destroya could, without hesitation, define "interoperability"
