Does Putin really need much in force numbers to create enough instability here to divert Ukrainian attention to help the war in the East? Attempting to just further muddy the waters in the region, further destabilizing it? Unfamiliar with the this particular region.

TBH I don't know what Putin could be up to. The troops he has in Transnistria are said to be exceptionally poor quality. To do anything there he would need reinforcements that he doesn't have. Maybe this along with the other stuff is him trying to build a case for mass mobilization.

Things are moving rapidly in Moldova. They placed the military on a higher combat readiness. Also Wargonza is in the region and they are a propaganda mouthpiece for the Russians.

They have 5,500 active troops, with 20,000 reserves plus 1,500 "poor" quality Russian troops.
it's not a ton and they can't commit too much to Ukraine or they would risk Moldova "retaking" their own territory. I think I tend to agree with the a post higher up that this might be to get a mobilization accomplished in Russia proper.

Little googling shows Transinistra asked to join Russia when they took Crimea in 2014. Their population is about 29% Russian, 28% Moldovan, and 23% Ukrainian giving Russia the slimmest of majority in ethnic makeup of the population.
Maybe Putin is repeating more of Hitlers playbook, but in ignorance of his current military shortfalls? In essence this is what Hitler did, but on a MUCH larger scale and more capable troops. Hitler could handle Austria and Czechoslovakia, but took it too far and spread his forces too thin. Seems exactly what Putin may be doing just on a much smaller scale, since we’re only talking adding Transinistra at the moment and he’s already struggling mightily in Ukraine. I think we’ve discussed the parallels ITT before with respect to Ukraine, but maybe this is his expansion of the same thinking beyond Ukraine.

Will be interesting to see how Romania responds. Don’t think they’ll accept new Russian intervention laying down. Will this drive up an increase in pro-unification supporters in Romania and Moldova?

How many Russian troops are in Transnistria again? 1000 or so reserve units?

Interesting thread.
TLDR: Transinistra was always part of the plan and the Ukrainians winning the battle of Mykolaiv and the sinking of the Moskva saved both Odessa and Transinistra, for now it appears.

Looks like about 1,500. I guess the gamble here maybe be the same as recognizing the contested territories of Ukraine in the beginning and banking on Moldova not responding since they weren’t supported and trained by us. Seems a stupid gamble given everything we’ve done with Ukraine at this point.

NATO needs a buffer from Russian aggression. Moldova looks like a good a good point to keep an eye on what the Russians are doing in southern Ukraine.

Much earlier in this thread I posted a picture of Lukashenko with a map showing an axis headed toward Moldolva. I do think we saw the beginning of Russia’s “pivot” when they ran into trouble in Mykolaiv.
