Right and I realize the Cold War was a different time and the USSR was obviously larger than present day Russia.
But I think a lot of experts were surprised at how much they overrated USSR capabilities in the aftermath of its collapse.
Present day Mexico has 90 percent the population of Russia and 90 percent of its GDP.

A conventional war between NATO and the warsaw pact would have been interesting in like the early 60s

Look god knows our military has issues, but holy shite I dont think anyone expected the Russians to be this bad.
And now the Ukrainians are maneuvering and the Russians are sitting still so those number will go up.
Yeah I've been watching Rob from LunkersTV on YouTube and he's put together his own map from a bunch of different sources and claims it is pretty up to date. He's got a other channel that I cannot remember the name of that does daily updates on. But he's been harping on these two supply routes that have been being used out of the east of Ukraine and their main objective as of now is to get to Izyum so they can push to Dnipro. The problem is there are heavily fortified positions that hit and run ambush the supply two supply convoys from each side every day. They've had to pretty much give up on taking Kharkiv to move units down and protect those two main supply routes.
If his info is correct, it is really Interesting to look at the strategy involved outside of Kyiv. The Russians are going to have one hell of a time getting into Odessa and central cities like Dnipro and Mykolaiv. And they're gonna need those places to supply their forces elsewhere in the country. They can't even secure two highways to use as supply lines. It's really amazing how badly they're failing.

Yep, and it looks like we oversold them again.
I just read on PT they dont have an overall commander for the operation. See thats so foreign to how we do it, but I think GT23 hit on it during the NCO corps discussion, a professional well trained staff and a robust NCO corps cost money and lost of it.

Is this the longest ever TD thread?

The NLAWS are capable of top attack according to the SAAB fact sheet
I recall seeing a video that showed they don't act like an rpg that makes direct contact with the target but detonate their shaped charge when in proximity to the target. I think the video showed the rocket over the target then shooting the charge down into a tank from about 2 ft above.

Andrew Coburn was writing about the ineptitude of the Soviet defense establishment in 1983 LINK

My cousin was first flight commander of the initial air assault in the first war. Flew a wild weasel F-4, super low to knock out all their air defense systems. His dad said he was first in, but no way to confirm that but was a hell of a pilot. Taught at Air Force version of Flag. Flew F-16s, 15s too

Kamil Gareev (sp?) has tweeted extensively about this. The army is kept at a low status to keep it from becoming an internal threat. Soldiers and even officers are extorted by organized crime and the authorities look the other way.

NEW: Russia has deployed more ground forces in southern Belarus, just 18 miles from Ukraine’s border, per overhead imagery.
Here’s satellite photo indicating new troop tents and equipment being staged in the Belorussian city of Dublin.

I said this way back on page 123:
quote:
Read somewhere that these reinforcement lines are why the Russian casualties are being reported as so high.
The Ukrainians appear to be allowing the initial waves to move through, and attacking the logistical support moving in after them, cutting off the supply lines.
If true, then the Russians are screwed.
