Satellite images reveal Engels-2 airbase cleared of Russian bombers

June 16, 2025, 08:56 AM

For the first time in years, there are no aircraft visible at Russia’s Engels-2 airbase — one of its most important hubs for strategic aviation — according to Sentinel-2 satellite imagery reviewed by The New Voice of Ukraine on June 15.

Located in Saratov Oblast, Engels-2 has long served as a launch point for Russian missile strikes on Ukraine and previously played a major role in air operations over Syria. However, analysis of imagery from April and May — before Ukraine’s Operation Cobweb targeted multiple Russian airfields — shows that Russia typically maintained a contingent of long-range bombers at the base. As of mid-June, none remain.

Two objects in the northern section of the base may resemble aircraft, but closer examination suggests they are likely decoys, said NV military correspondent Serhiy Okunev.

JB gave the Red Cross credit for the body exchanges and even intimated that the Red Cross was keeping counts.

If you don't think there is an oversaturation of support for Ukraine on the left and an oversaturation of support for Russia on the right, idk what to tell you.

Trump has made some on the right sympathetic to people like Putin. Not outright fans necessarily, though those do exist too and are more fringe. When the normies discovered that the media was lying to us a lot (which it is) they took the lesson from that as "the media is *always* lying to us" instead of "the media *often* lies to us".

And on the left the world is seen through an oppressed vs oppressor lens, so more hardcore support for Ukraine than you'd find among the general population is pretty natural there on the left. But that support is only as meaningful as how good saying the "correct" thing in their mind can make them feel at the time. Right now "No Kings" and "Free Palestine" are the hotness. I would imagine both have been trending a lot harder on shite like TikTok than anything about Ukraine as well.

ISW Update June 16 2025

quote:

Key Takeaways:

Ukraine and Russia conducted an exchange that included the bodies of soldiers killed in action (KIA) on June 16 in accordance with agreements reached during talks in Istanbul on June 2.

Ukraine's Foreign Intelligence Service (SZRU) reported that the Kremlin is spreading narratives about the POW and KIA exchanges in order to sow panic in Ukraine and discredit Ukraine in the international community – in line with ISW’s recent assessments.

Russia’s consumption of its Soviet-era tank stores appears to be slowing, possibly due to Russia's increasing transition to using motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on the battlefield.

Russia continues to set conditions to pose a long-term strategic threat to the United States and its Western allies even after the end to Russia's war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces recently advanced near Borova and in Zaporizhia Oblast, and Russian forces recently advanced near Siversk, Toretsk, and Novopavlivka.

Donald Trump sceptical of imposing new sanctions on Russia

G7 allies and US members of Congress have encouraged president to increase pressure on Moscow

Donald Trump said he was not ready to impose new sanctions on Russia over the war in Ukraine despite mounting pressure from G7 allies and members of Congress to heighten the pressure on Moscow.

Speaking alongside Sir Keir Starmer, the British prime minister at the G7 summit in Canada on Monday, the US president said he was sceptical of new sanctions on Russia, even as other members of the group were expected to announce further punitive measures against Moscow.

“Don’t forget, you know, sanctions cost us a lot of money. When I sanction a country, that costs the US a lot of money, a tremendous amount of money,” Trump said. “Sanctions are not that easy. It’s not just a one-way street.”

'A brutal strike' — Massive Russian missile and drone attack hits Kyiv, killing 15, injuring at least 124

by Olena Goncharova and The Kyiv Independent news desk June 17, 2025 1:35 AM (Updated: June 17, 2025 2:33 PM)

Editor's note: This is a developing story and is being updated as new details emerge.

At least 15 people have been killed and 124 others injured after a mass Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight on June 17.

The almost nine-hour long attack saw Moscow's forces launch large numbers of kamikaze attack drones, as well as cruise and ballistic missiles at Ukraine's capital.

Kyiv Independent journalists on the ground reported the sounds of drones, missiles, and multiple rounds of explosions throughout the night.

The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed that Russia launched 472 aerial weapons overnight, including nearly 280 Shahed-type attack drones and two Kinzhal ballistic missiles. The strike primarily targeted Kyiv.

Ukraine's air defense forces reportedly destroyed 428 air targets, including 239 Shahed drones and 15 Kh-101 cruise missiles. Air defenses also intercepted one Kinzhal missile, while another was reportedly lost from radar tracking.

15 people have been killed and at least 124 people have been injured, according to the latest reports.

President Volodymyr Zelensky called the assault "one of the most horrifying attacks on Kyiv," saying more than 440 drones and 32 missiles were launched across Ukraine overnight.

Cruise missile tears through Kyiv apartment block, Interior Minister explains
17.06.2025 14:18

According to preliminary data, it was the cruise missile, which struck a multi-storey residential building in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district on Tuesday.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated this live on air, responding to a question about the type of missile used, a Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“The type of missile will be determined by the investigation. But I can clarify earlier information — it was a cruise missile. We’ll provide further details on its designation and model later through our experts. What I can say now is that the missile entered the building at approximately the fourth floor level, and the explosion was so powerful that the entire stairwell structure collapsed,” he said.

Responding to other questions, the minister noted that this night attack was one of the most massive on Kyiv since the beginning of the full-scale war.

“As for Kyiv, around 50 buildings were seriously damaged. In this particular neighborhood where I am now, about 50,000 people live. It’s a densely populated area, and that’s where the missile struck. The same situation is true for other locations. In Kyiv alone, there are 27 locations today where rescue workers, police, and utility services have been or are currently operating,” said the Interior Minister.

Moscow blames Ukraine's air defense after its missiles hit Kyiv homes
June 17, 2025, 05:33 AM

Russia tries to twist the truth after its massive overnight attack, which left many dead and wounded — by claiming it was "air defense" that caused the damage, Andrii Kovalenko, Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) Chief wrote on June 17.

“The Russians are already lying that this was ‘air defense’," he wrote.

"Bastards, just vile bastards. There is proof, there is video, there are remains of their missiles and Shahed drones.”

He also drew a parallel between Russian and Iranian tactics:

“Russia hits residential buildings. Iran hits residential buildings," he wrote in his another post, published half an hour earlier.
