Austin is correct that no single weapon system will change the course of the war, but his comments ignore how weapon systems and their accompanying rules of engagement do affect Ukrainian capabilities, and that changes in capabilities can change the course of wars. Western military assistance remains crucial for Ukraine's ability to defend itself, and Austin’s statement ignores the Ukrainian long-range strike capability requirement necessary to disrupt Russian rear staging areas.

I know that a few here were skeptical that Russia would destroy its own towns in Kursk.

British Defence Intelligence
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 07 September 2024
Russian forces have made increased tactical gains around the town of Vuhledar, situated approximately 30km southwest of Donetsk city in eastern Ukraine.
Vuhledar has been a long-term target for Russian forces, which has acted as a lynchpin against Russian advances in southern Donetsk oblast. Russia has previously made repeated attempts to assault the town, which resulted in heavy losses, but with little territory gained.
However, in August 2024, Russian forces made advances to the east and west of Vuhledar, taking control of the nearby villages of Prechystivka and contesting Vodiane. In the next month, it is likely that Russia will continue attempts to advance around Vuhledar and threaten the town itself.

State of emergency declared in part of Russia's Voronezh Oblast due to ammunition detonation – videos
Roman Petrenko — Saturday, 7 September 2024, 08:50
A state of emergency has been declared in the Ostrogozhsk district of Russia’s Voronezh Oblast, where a fire broke out near facilities at risk for explosions, leading to detonation overnight.
Source: Alexander Gusev, the governor of Voronezh Oblast, on Telegram
Details: The evacuation of residents from one settlement is ongoing.
Temporary accommodation centres have been set up, where dozens of people are already staying.
Russian officials claimed that "no civilians were affected".
Local residents reported that the attack targeted an ammunition depot in the village of Soldatskoye.
The Russian Defence Ministry stated that two drones were downed over Belgorod Oblast and two more over Kursk Oblast overnight. The ministry did not comment on the attack in Voronezh Oblast.

I kinda think that we will soon learn just exactly how many pontoon units Russia has available.

It was also a pro Francisco Franco thread for some reason.
Hopefully Lima can come explain to us all how true dictatorship has never really been tried yet and will surely work this time when we have a dictator.

It’s actually been tried and has been extremely successful. An enlightened benevolent dictator is, without a doubt, the form of government that delivers the best. Unfortunately, they always fall into the hands of brutal thugs like Stalin.

In what I consider a shocking story, the Canadian government actually funded a documentary film made by a veteran Russian filmmaker about the lives of Russian soldiers, and the Venice Film Festival agreed to screen the film.

Literal Russian propaganda paid for and promoted by the Canadian government and the Venice Film Festival.

"Unfortunately, they always fall into the hands of brutal thugs like Stalin."
In the case of monarchies, the larger problem was simple incompetence. Especially when rulers came from the inbred gene pool that was royaly. What Dan Carlin calls "The roll of the monarchy dice." A competant monarch can easily outperform what we've been getting lately.

Interesting thread on the value of Russia's sovereign wealth fund.
The TLDR of it is that the net worth of the fund has remained stable since January. But the reason that the net worth has remained the same is that, while Russia has sold off a lot of gold this year, the price of gold has continued to rise, meaning that Russia's remaining gold reserves are more valuable.
If the price of gold were to drop, then Russia would immediately face a significant drop in the value of their sovereign wealth fund.
