ISW Update Sept 7
quote:
Key Takeaways:
Ukraine's Main Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) Head Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov noted that Ukraine's incursion into Kursk Oblast is having theater-wide impacts on Russian offensive operations in Ukraine and addressed the prospects for continued Russian offensive operations in Winter 2024–2025.
Iran reportedly recently delivered more than 200 Fateh-360 short-range ballistic missiles to Russia.
Ukraine continues to successfully adapt and develop its anti-drone capabilities, allowing Ukrainian forces to leverage lower-end systems to offset Russian pressures on Ukraine's limited air defense umbrella.
Russian forces recently regained territory and Ukrainian forces recently advanced in Kursk Oblast amid continued Ukrainian offensive operations in the area on September 7.
Russian forces recently advanced near Kupyansk, Pokrovsk, and Donetsk City and in the Dnipro River Delta.
Russian officers continue to mistreat and abuse their subordinates likely due to poor command training and discipline.

Iranian MP confirms sending ballistic missiles to Russia, though other official deny it
Oleh Pavliuk — Sunday, 8 September 2024, 13:02
Ahmad Bakhshayesh Ardestani, a member of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, has admitted that Iranian ballistic missiles have been sent to Russia, which it needs to fire at Ukraine.
Source: He said this in an interview with the Iranian newspaper Didban Iran, European Pravda reports, citing Iran International
Commenting on Western media reports of ballistic missiles being sent to Russia, Ardestani said that Tehran is forced to barter with Russia "for our needs, including importing soybeans and wheat".
Quote: "Part of the barter involves sending missiles, and another part involves sending military drones to Russia," he added.
Asked whether sending ballistic missiles to Russia could lead to further sanctions against Iran, the Iranian lawmaker replied: "It can't get any worse than it already is. We give missiles to Hezbollah, Hamas, and Hashd al-Shaab [Shiite militia in Iraq - ed.], so why not to Russia?"
"We sell weapons and receive dollars. We circumvent sanctions through our partnership with Russia. We import soybeans, corn, and other goods from Russia. Europeans sell arms to Ukraine. NATO has entered Ukraine, so why shouldn’t we support our ally by sending missiles and drones to Russia?" Ardestani said.
Despite this statement, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani once again denied reports of ballistic missiles being sent to Russia in a commentary to IRNA on Sunday.

And yet, lots of people in DC will pretend that sanctions will effectively punish the mullahs.

explain to us all how true dictatorship has never really been tried yet
It’s actually been tried and has been extremely successful. An enlightened benevolent dictator is, without a doubt, the form of government that delivers the best. Unfortunately, they always fall into the hands of brutal thugs like Stalin.
I guess we'd have to define "dictator" and look for those examples. People tend to want self-rule and fight for it and rebel... even if in the process they get something worse when the dust settles (Iran)... and any rebellious movements are usually dealt with brutally, which does away with the "benevolent" part...

I do have to wonder a bit just how much of this is taking place:
"Oh those amazing Ukrainians -- they just invented their own cruise missile, their own jet-powered drone, and now they are testing their own ballistic missile. They are amazing inventors!

They were researching, inventing, then making much of the USSRs technology. Over a decade ago working with a group on a useful tool for stimulating old oil wells, the most advanced electronics part of the tool could only be made in the USA, Russia or Ukraine to create electrical plasma pulses

Everyday we see missiles fired into Ukraine by Russia from Russia. We should do everything we can to a point to help Ukraine fire back at the shooters.

Russian military drone has crashed in the Eastern part of Latvia yesterday. There is an ongoing investigation. We are in close contact with our allies. The number of such incidents is increasing along the Eastern flank of NATO and we must address them collectively.

Evacuation trains from Pokrovsk will stop on Wednesday. Is this what winning looks like....
When will zelensky decide he has enough money and stop this nonsense?

Funny thing about a democracy. It's not Zelensky's decision.
The Ukrainian people still have the will, and the means, to carry on the resistance. So they keep fighting.
There's only one man who can stop this war single handedly. That's the man who started it.
By the way: what happened to that huge hole you said was opened up in the lines near Pokrovsk? You said the whole front was about to collapse.

Not so great at invention or innovation. But pretty good at manufacturing.
Biden says: You can't use our weapons to strike deep into Russia. Only your own weapons for that.
Then the next day some CIA dudes show up with a trailer load of parts: "Are you guy perhaps interested in building some long range cruise missiles?"
Works for me

Kinda like how, in mid-2022, we (NATO) didn't want to "escalate" by giving Ukraine any MiGs, so we took them apart and gave Ukraine some "spare parts," and then Ukraine put the planes back together.
But yeah, if we give Ukraine the parts and the technical specs, and work with their guys to help them set up factories, then we don't have to deal with the "escalation" managers.
