The way Putin did it was genius. Recognize the rebel held areas as separate countries and then send Russian troops in as a "peacekeeping mission". If he had rlled tanks into Kyiv other countries would have been forced to respond but now they'll just release some strongly worded statements and add some sanctions.

He started flooding those regions with Russian troops and civilians in 2014. Only had to wait to 2021 before the world kind of accepted that those areas "always spoke Russian"
I wonder if that is Mexico's end game too
