For $500 million? DoD was placing value of 30 year old Patriot battery at $1 billion a year ago. They decided to use the surplus price now of 1/4th new?

I can remember when the Berlin Wall fell and a lot of people did a "uh... wait a sec... this might be a bad idea" thing about reunification.

A German guy I knew who was high up in BASF told me exactly that. As the wall was falling he expected Germany to develop their own nuclear weapons and start WW3. I knew German engineers who blamed WW2 on the Poles and were eager to have another try at it. We neutered Japan as well, for good reason. Now the cries of "why aren't the German and Japanese militaries carrying their own weight!?!." are pretty F'ing funny. We designed it that way, and with damn good reason. Maybe it is time for them to build their militaries back up. Or maybe it's "be careful what you wish for".

Sounds like someone has finally delivered ia message to Canada.

LINK

quote:

Canada says it expects to reach its NATO commitment to spend two per cent of its GDP on defence by 2032.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement on the final day of the NATO summit in Washington. For over a year, Canada has faced increasing pressure and criticism from alliance members to boost defence spending.

Until Thursday’s announcement, Canada was the only alliance member without a deadline to reach the two per cent target. In April, the federal government released its long-awaited defence policy that pledged Canada would see military spending rise to 1.76 per cent of GDP by 2030.

A history teacher I had in college went over Vietnam's 20th Century history, getting to the First Indochina War, and how De Gaulle decided it was a waste and pulled out... and then Eisenhower and Kennedy got involved, despite De Gaulle warning them "it's not worth it. There is no Imperial Vietnamese leadership that you'll be fighting for..." but the US dived in, anyway. And why? It didn't make much sense... even as a proxy war with Russia over Communism, it didn't make much sense... then he traces his finger on a map over to Japan and says "this is the real reason. Japan had rebuilt itself too fast and too successfully... and they were some in positions there starting to get some ideas about going back to their old ways. And a feeling that Korea had exhausted the US. The Vietnam War was to send a message to Japan that we'd commit our military resources if it came down to it, again. And maybe they got the message... or maybe they realized they didn't need to militarily conquer the region to be at the top of it, once resources were traded freely."

Canada is freaking out about the possibility of a US Civil War or US domestic terrorism spilling over to them, or a regime getting power in the US that is not aligned with Western values...

So I think the population's views on the importance of defense spending has suddenly shifted quite a bit.
