This is the crap that gets extremely frustrating: LINK

Polska Zbrojna reports that Poland will receive 79 additional M-ATV MRAP's from the USA for free under the Excess Defense Articles (EDA) act.

These vehicles will be delivered to the Polish armed forces in the second halve of January 2024.

The Excess Defense Article provision allows the DoD to give away stuff we no longer need to allies for free.

So why hasn't the Biden administration sent these to Ukraine already? Ukrainians die every day because of a shortage of armored vehicles of any kind. The obvious answer (as always) is that Jake Sullivan doesn't want Ukraine to win.

Poland gives shite to Ukraine. Poland gets shite from the U.S.

I haven’t read any treaties or anything but I’d assume the red tape of using the EDA is easier to navigate when a NATO member is involved.

Better to give the stuff to a NATO country than to have it blown to bits in Ukraine.

If Ukraine does lose that means that we will spend 100 times more in the future building up the eastern flank of Nato. And they will spend it. Who does that spending benefit? Certainly not the US taxpayer when it could have been avoided by checking the Russians now in Ukraine.. I would say their buddies in the MIC.That whole bunch up there is incompetent as hell starting with Biden,Sullivan and Loyd Austin. They have drug this thing out and as you said, at the costs of thousands of lives.

Is the US involved in this transaction?

Yes Poland was going to give its migs to the USA and the USA was going to give the migs to Ukraine. That deal was proposed in March or April of 2022 when Poland was still worried about provoking Russia. This arrangement was would have given Poland cover by saying that they didn’t directly give them to Ukraine. Then later last year Poland offered to give the remaining 19 Mig29s and Su22s (which have been upgraded to carry western weapons and have modern western avionics and radars and the other shite they need to meet NATO standards) in exchange for an equal number of F16s. Romania upgraded its Mig21s to NATO standards and be able to perform ground support missions in the early-2000s and offered them to Ukraine in exchange for the USA or the UK taking over their air protection needs while they finished swapping over their air force to using F16s they had already purchased from Portugal. The Biden administration offered to sell Poland more F16s but wouldn’t swap them for migs to give Ukraine (even though it did the same with Slovakia) mainly because the Biden administration has a thing against Poland. It declined Romania’s offer because that would mean forward deploying USAF planes to Romania which might been seen as a provocation since Romania borders Ukraine and the Black Sea.

I have always thought and still think the Biden administration should have made the deals because that would have given the Ukrainians > 30 aircraft that they already know how to fly and maintain. The Mig21s and Su22s might not have been able to go toe to toe with modern Russian fighters but it would have doubled the number of aircraft Ukraine had for ground attacks which would have been helpful during an offensive like they tried to conduct this summer. Then the DOD has the balls to be critical of Ukraine for conducting a counteroffensive without having enough aircraft to contest the after the USA denied Ukraine the aircraft and pushed them into the offensive.

ISW Update

Key Takeaways:

Ukrainian officials continue to warn that Russia maintains its maximalist objectives and additional goals for territorial conquest in Ukraine, despite recent comments made by Western officials suggesting that Russia is already defeated.

Ukraine will very likely receive the first batch of F-16s before the end of 2023.

The Russia Aerospace Forces (VKS) reportedly lost three Su-34 attack aircraft in southern Ukraine between December 21-22.

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) named Russian President Vladimir Putin’s close ally and Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev, as the individual responsible for the assassination of Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin.

The Kremlin continues to position itself as a neutral arbitrator in the Israel-Hamas war despite its recent increasing anti-Israel rhetoric.

US President Joe Biden signed an executive order on December 22 granting the US Treasury Department the authority to impose sanctions on banks and other financial institutions that facilitate Russian sanctions evasion.

Russian officials continue to downplay deteriorating Russian-Armenian relations, possibly as part of a concerted campaign to improve the bilateral relationship amid concerns about Russia’s waning influence in the South Caucasus.

Russian forces made confirmed advances northeast and southwest of Bakhmut and southwest of Avdiivka and continued positional engagements along the entire line of contact.

A Ukrainian intelligence official reported that Russian forces are intensifying force generation efforts to keep pace with the rate of Russian losses in Ukraine so that they can sustain ongoing offensive operations along the front.

Kremlin-appointment Commissioner on Children's Rights Maria Lvova-Belova outlined new social support measures meant to further integrate occupied Zaporizhia Oblast into Russia during a working visit to the occupied oblast on December 22.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE
23 December 2023

In recent weeks, both Ukrainian and Russian troops have highly likely suffered from exceptional levels of rat and mice infestation in some sectors of the front line.

This year's mild autumn, along with ample food from fields left fallow due to the fighting, have likely contributed to the increase in the rodent population. As the weather has become colder, the animals are likely seeking shelter in vehicles and defensive positions. Rodents will add further pressure to front line combatants' morale.

In addition, they pose a risk to military equipment by gnawing through cables - as recorded in the same area during the Second World War. Unverified reports also suggest Russian units starting to suffer from increased sickness cases which the troops attribute to the pest problem.

Well it is illegal to drive sober in Russia so this is not surprising. Funny but not surprising.

This evening @leeuwengew said on Dutch television the Netherlands "will supply everything [F16] we have and that still flies - we have a total of 42 - whatever flies and can be delivered, we will also deliver at some point."

Older tech, but very effective against drones which have become a major component of the war.

Do we know when F-16s will be operational over Ukraine? I've heard anywhere from January to July.

It will be between April-June when we see the first handful, maybe6, F-16s and their trained pilots would be cleared for flight operations. This will be the cream of the cream of the crop of fighter pilots that Ukraine has that also already had a pretty strong grip on the English language. The rest will come as their instructors sign off on them.

That’s the big issue. The Netherlands operate some of, or the oldest, F-16 airframes that are still in active service. What condition are they really in? That’s something we don’t know but you’ll find out as the number of deliveries come. if they are in small increments you know they have a lot of planes that have to have maintenance done to have them deemed airworthy.

Also saw this funny tidbit. Who else here is shocked that North Korea makes shitty shite? Russian artillery barrels blowing up, shells falling short and hitting their own troops or detonating early on the gun crews. How could this be when President Yum-yum oversees everything in the country?

Off topic but a friend who now lives in the Nevada high desert was involved in the Space Shuttle design. He was not surprised when issues started happening as they were only designed for a few flights each. It wasn't just the engines and tiles which became an issue

The skin on an aircraft is extremely thin obviously which saves weight, which in turn saves fuel and increases speed or load out. Each airframe has a designated number of recommended flight hours it is rated for. Those F-16s Ukraine, even the better condition ones that have had their MLU done, have a whole lot of punishment over the years. Most our F-16s on active duty are the F-16C/D 50/52. The aircraft they are getting are F-16A/B Block 15 aircraft with most having their MLU done on then which puts it pretty close in capability to the Block 50. The most important thing is going to be which radars are in these fighters. There’s a lot of difference in how effective 40 miles and 120 miles is to detect the enemy and how many pilot’s lives it will save.
