The New York Times (NYT) reported that US officials will send Ukraine hybrid air defense systems in fall 2023.[39] The NYT cited US officials talking about the so-called FrankenSAM systems that that merge advanced Western air defense missiles with modified Soviet launchers or other missile launchers that Ukraine already possesses.[40] The FrankenSAM combinations include modified Soviet Buk launchers and American Sea Sparrow missiles, Soviet-era radars and American Sidewinder missiles, and Cold War-era Hawk systems.[41] The NYT reported that the US is testing a FrankenSAM combination of a Patriot missile and a Ukrainian domestically produced radar system.[42] US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia Policy Laura Cooper stated that the FrankenSAMs contribute to filling critical gaps in Ukrainian air defenses.[43]
Unspecified actors may have purposefully conspired to shut down a prominent Russian Airborne Forces (VDV)-affiliated milblogger. A Russian VDV-affiliated milblogger announced on October 28 that he was forced to shut down his Telegram channel, implying that unspecified actors abducted the raccoon that the milblogger had been using as a mascot to help gain notoriety and fundraise for Russian forces
The Russian information space continues to debate the future of the Wagner Group’s remaining personnel. Wagner-affiliated Russian milbloggers claimed on October 28 that the Wagner Group is officially a detachment of Rosgvardia and will retain its structures and commanders.

Key Takeaways:
Ongoing antisemitic demonstrations in the Republic of Dagestan and elsewhere in the North Caucasus are highlighting heightened interethnic and interreligious tensions in Russia.
The Kremlin has yet to respond and appears to have left regional authorities to make an official response to the demonstrations.
The Kremlin will likely struggle to reassure constituencies that the situation is under control and convince Jewish audiences that Jewish minorities are safe in Russia despite its efforts to present Russia as a religiously tolerant country.
Russian ultranationalists expressed concerns that antisemitic demonstrations will spread from Dagestan and the North Caucasus elsewhere in Russia.
Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Head Alexander Bortnikov and Russian Investigative Committee Head Alexander Bastrykin may be attempting to capitalize on heightened ethnoreligious tensions in Russia to regain favor with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Russian milbloggers claimed on October 29 that Airborne Forces (VDV) Commander Colonel General Mikhail Teplinsky replaced Colonel General Oleg Makarevich as the commander of the Russian “Dnepr” Grouping of Forces operating in the Kherson direction.
Ukrainian forces advanced near Bakhmut amid continued offensive operations near Bakhmut and in western Zaporizhia Oblast on October 29.

The attack seems to have been an attempt to destroy another S-400 system. I haven't seen any reports yet on the success of the attack.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 30 October 2023
A Russian state-backed private military company (PMC) is specifically attempting to recruit women into combat roles in Ukraine for the first time. Recent social media adverts have appealed for female recruits to join Borz Battalion, a part of Russian PMC Redut, to work as snipers and uncrewed aerial vehicle operators. Redut is likely directly sponsored by the Russian Main Directorate of Intelligence.
In March 2023, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said that 1,100 women were deployed in Ukraine, which would equate to only around 0.3 per cent of its force. As Redut's advert points out, they currently serve in mostly medical support and food service roles.
It remains unclear whether official Russian defence forces will seek to follow suit and open more combat roles to women. Women have rarely taken front line fighting roles within pro-Russian forces during the current conflict; however, there was a strong tradition of female snipers and other combat troops in Soviet forces during the Second World War.

smdh woke arse russia putting women into combat roles

Adding women to combat roles is something I'd expect of Ukraine -- in fact, Ukraine has already done it.
But Russia? Doesn't Russia have a sea of combat worthy male bodies to utilize?
We know they're running out of missiles, but are they running out of men after 2 years? If so, they were never a serious threat to the "west" in an actual war.

Correct. Along with 15 year old boys being captured by Russian soldiers.
It's a shame when the US takes your homeland. Unthinkable when we take their childhood.

Are you referring to the 15 year Olds that Russia used in propaganda videos?
quote:
Early in November, Russian state TV carried a report about two "underage soldiers" serving alongside separatists in the rebel stronghold of Donetsk. Both are called Andrey and are members of one of the most widely-known rebel units, the Vostok battalion. As is common among fighters in Ukraine, they have their own noms de guerre - Royce and Stark.
Royce leads a supply squad, while Stark is in charge of a munitions depot, official Rossiya 1 TV said. "Stark leaves his Kalashnikov behind only when he is on leave," it added.
The battalion's commanders were like fathers to the boys now, the report said. "We need more guys like them and we won't be afraid of enemies. They are the future generation," said one Vostok commander.
Russian TV did not specify the boys' exact age, but in an earlier interview broadcast on Finnish YLE television this year Royce said he was 15. He was shown flanked by two young men wearing balaclavas, one of whom claimed to be 17.
Royce told YLE that he taught recruits how to handle weapons and move about on the battlefield. "I keep my eye on my trainees as if they were children," he said.
A fighter with another prominent rebel unit, led by a Russian nicknamed Motorola, said he was serving alongside children as young as 16, according to Ukrainian daily Segodnya. The unnamed rebel told the paper that children were normally sent to training camps and were kept back from frontline combat.
To be fair Ukraine did have a 17 year old Sapper
quote:
But other Ukrainian TV channels have featured a pro-Kiev child soldier, without questioning whether it was right for him to be involved in the conflict.
Their reports told the story of a 17-year old who had spent two months in the conflict zone. For a week, he was a sapper at Savur Mohyla, the scene of extremely heavy fighting, one report said. Eventually, he was wounded and taken to hospital in central Ukraine.
Speaking from hospital, he told 5 Kanal that he had lied about his age to enlist in a volunteer battalion. But his commander seemed to be aware of how young he was.

American Revolution
quote:
How Old Were Continental Soldiers?
The official enlistment age for the Continental Army was 16, (15 with parental consent) but soldiers could sign on up to the age of 55. The majority of Continental soldiers were young men, usually around 17 or 18 years old. Older soldiers had more responsibilities at home, such as families to raise and farms to tend to, so they usually joined the local militias instead because the militia was a part-time commitment that worked locally and didn’t have to march off to war like the Continental Army did.
Civil War
quote:
Throughout the American Civil War, approximately 250,000–420,000 males under the age of 18 were involved in both Union and Confederate forces.[1] It is estimated that 100,000 Union soldiers were 15 years of age or younger.[2] By one estimate, approximately ten percent of Union soldiers were underaged (it is likely the Confederate army had a similar proportion of underage soldiers).[3]

BEIJING, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu accused the West on Monday of wanting to expand the conflict in Ukraine to the Asia-Pacific region, Russian state media reported.
Speaking at the Xiangshan Forum, China's biggest military diplomacy conference, Shoigu said the U.S.-led NATO alliance was "covering up the buildup of military force in the Asia-Pacific region with an ostentatious desire for dialogue, imposing alliances and lines of operational interaction on partners," the TASS agency reported.
"Having provoked an acute crisis in Europe, the West is seeking to spread conflict potential to the Asia-Pacific region, and in several directions."
quote:
Shoigu said Moscow was ready for talks on the post-conflict settlement of the Ukraine crisis and coexistence with the West, but only once Western countries stopped seeking Russia's strategic defeat.

Ukraine’s armed forces lost approximately 90,000 military troops killed and wounded during the counter-offensive it launched a few months ago without accomplishing any substantial tactical successes, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Monday.
“Only since June 4 - that is, since the start of the West's widely publicized and generously funded Ukrainian counter-offensive - Kyiv has lost over 90,000 military personnel killed or wounded, 600 tanks, and nearly 1,900 armored vehicles of various classes,” Shoigu said as cited by state news agency TASS.
He added: “At the same time, no tactically significant successes were made on the battlefield.”
Additionally, the Russian defense minister said Moscow remained prepared for discussions on the post-conflict resolution of the Ukraine crisis.
“In case the necessary conditions are created, we remain ready for political discussions on a realistic basis - both on the post-conflict resolution of the Ukrainian crisis, and on the further coexistence with the West as a whole,” Shoigu said.
He stressed that “it is important to ensure equal relations among all nuclear powers - permanent members of the UN Security Council, which bear a special responsibility for maintaining peace and global stability.”
On the other side, Ukraine said on Monday Russia has lost approximately 299,940 troops in the war since the invasion started on February 24, 2022, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces.

Now 18 months into the war, Russia's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu seemingly admitted Russia's offensives in Ukraine could last until at least 2025.
Anton Gerashchenko, an advisor in Ukraine's internal affairs ministry, posted a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, in which Shoigu said the Russian army is continuing to "build up the combat power" of its forces to face Ukraine's counteroffensive.
To achieve its military goals, Shoigu said Russia was supplying its troops with modern weapons and offering improved training, despite reports indicating Russian troops lack advanced training and are low on weapons.
Shoigu added that Russia could achieve its military goals with "consistent implementation of the measures in the action until 2025."

Shoigu made the remarks at the Beijing Xiangshan Forum, China's largest military diplomacy event, saying that Russia is also ready for talks on further "co-existence" with the West, but said Western countries needed to stop seeking the strategic defeat of his country.
The prospect of peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow have been raised multiple times since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
The Kremlin has specified a few conditions that are non-negotiable for Russia, including that Ukraine must accept the September 2022 annexation of four of its regions—Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia—following referendums called by Putin that were deemed illegal by the international community.
Ukraine has said that any peace deal must invalidate the September 2022 annexations of its territory, and that the Crimean Peninsula, which Putin annexed in 2014, must once again be considered part of Ukraine.
"In case the necessary conditions are created, we remain ready for political discussions on a realistic basis —both on the post-conflict resolution of the Ukrainian crisis, and on the parameters of further coexistence with the West as a whole," Shoigu said, speaking at the 10th Xiangshan Forum, according to Russian state news agency Tass.
"It is important to ensure equal relations between all nuclear powers—permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, which bear special responsibility for maintaining peace and global stability," said Shoigu.
"In order to form a fair, multipolar world order, it is necessary to update the international security architecture and give it greater stability. To do this, it is necessary to unite the efforts of all interested countries," he added.

The Pentagon isn't restricting how Israel uses weapons the U.S. has provided for its fight against Hamas in Gaza, a spokeswoman said. "That is really up to the Israel Defense Force to use in how they are going to conduct their operations," Sabrina Singh told reporters Monday. "But we're not putting any constraints on that." By contrast, the U.S. secretly modified the advanced rocket launchers it gave Ukraine so they couldn't be used to fire long-range missiles into Russia.

Boy that really grinds my gears. It makes 0 sense to tie Ukraine’s hands behind its back but not Israel. Ukraine defeating Russia and removing it from the threat board is more important than Israel vs Hamas and the Palestinians. Not only is the benefit greater but the risk is less. Russia isn’t going to do a damn thing against the USA or Europe if Ukraine used western weapons to strike inside Russia. However, islamic extremist will use the USA and Europe’s support for Israel to recruit more terrorists to attack the USA and Europe.

That is bullshite and you know it. Anyone with half a brain should be able to realize that Putin and Russia are not stupid enough to attack the USA or NATO despite what their rhetoric says. It would take a deliberate attack carried by the USA or NATO for Russia to do anything.
quote:
US Hamas war.
US Hamas war? Highly unlikely. Terrorist attacks carried out in the USA by muslim extremists. The risk of Americans dying inside the USA is much higher as a result of supporting Israel and letting them do whatever the f**k they want to against Hamas with the weapons we supply them than the risk of Americans dying inside the USA as a result of supporting Ukraine and letting them do whatever the f**k they want to Russia with the weapons we supply them.
ETA: For the record, I am for supporting Ukraine and Israel and letting both use the weapons however they wish.
