Yet, here we are.
I would argue that this is the difference, though.
A 1 km advance may seem small, but a km a day would mean reaching the Sea of Azov in less than 3 months.
In fact, it would be faster than that, as the Russian rear would ultimately not survive the compaction at half that distance, as that's when all logistics would come within artillery range.
Ukraine is just 45 km from the center of Melitopol, and that's now within the range of the Caesar and Archer guns that Ukraine can use. Every km matters in ways that go beyond simple distance on a field.

Norway will transfer another NASAMS support package to Ukraine. It will include two additional fire control centers, two launchers and spare parts, which will ensure the endurance, redundancy and flexibility of already transferred air defense equipment.

quote:The British defence secretary suggested Ukraine needed to put more emphasis on saying thank you for western help when he was asked about President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s complaints on Tuesday that the country had not been issued a firm timetable or set of conditions for joining Nato. Ben Wallace said such was the Ukrainians haste to get all the help they could meant they did not always say they were grateful for the help received. “Whether we like it or not, people want to see a bit of gratitude,” the minister said at a briefing in the margins of the Nato summit in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius. “Sometimes you are asking countries to give up their own stocks” of weapons and said making repeated demands from the west could risk alienating some key constituencies. “Sometimes you have to persuade lawmakers on the [Capitol] Hill in America,” he added. Wallace revealed that he had travelled to Ukraine last year to be presented with a shopping list of weapons. “You know, we’re not Amazon,” he said. “I told them that last year, when I drove 11 hours to be given a list.” But he said he understood Zelenskiy was speaking to his own public and that despite his complaint on Tuesday, the final summit deal was a good one for Ukraine. There was an acceptance that “Ukraine belongs at Nato” and that amounted to an effective invitation for membership whenever the conflict died down. Really interesting. Zelensky is such a compelling public figure, but one reads this kind of thing regularly. He and his team are not particularly good diplomats. The anger from Zelensky yesterday about the text of the NATO invitation was ridiculous. Yesterday, Zelensky attacked Biden. Today, he will ask him for ATACMS. Doesn't seem like good strategy.
While Ukraine needs to win this thing, they are still a sneaky corrupt bunch. I don’t trust Zelensky. Early on they “accidentally” flipped a missile in to Poland and blamed the Russians. Twice. I think he will do anything to try to get NATO boots on the ground. We need to watch him closely.

Hey, the Ukrainians don't trust themselves. BBC did some "man on the street" interviews in Kyiv about NATO membership:
I posted last night about the member of parliament arrested yesterday for taking bribes. I think that most Americans would agree with Biden that Ukraine has more work to do in cleaning up corruption before it can become a member of NATO.

You poorly play checkers, much less chess, I’d wager.

The Ukrainians are desperate and are engaged in an existential war. For them to seek to manipulate public opinion in NATO and elsewhere does not make them "sneaky corrupt". We manipulate news and events for far less worthy reasons.
You can hate and distrust Ukraine if you want, but manipulation of wartime events, news and public opinion doesn't seem like a great place to start.

Sophisticated enough to hide the conspiracy but not sophisticated enough to realize that western intelligence could obviously investigate and figure out origins eh?

I can fully believe it was accidental. I used the example of a stary Syrian anti aircraft missle hitting Cyprus in 2019. It does happen unfortunately

Barbarians whose genetic material should be swept into the void.

But the people on here who constantly defend Russia will turn right around, and in the next breath, they will call someone else a "groomer."

Same. And I’m a firm believer that the jungle grows back and a need for constant vigilance. But I must confess I largely thought economic integration between G-20 nations largely made this type of conflict obsolete (that said, I always thought nordstream-2 was idiotic, but figured it would be used for good old fashioned price gauging).
Covid and this invasion have certainly caused me to re-evaluate some of my basic assumptions.

Huh? Nordstream was not moving anything due compressors were wrecked by hydrates. Without any ability to repair them, Gazprom was going to have pay some bigtime penalties due breach of contract. Gazprom had been gouging since at least early 2021.

My point is I think (or thought?) economic integration makes conflict between nations less likely.
Integrating European industry and energy dependence with Russian energy is the exact type of integration my belief system should support. I’m just pointing out that in this particular case, the nordstream projects seemed more likely to create a relationship of leverage that would fuel/excuse conflict rather than a relationship of co-dependence that would diffuse conflict.

Russians are fricking filthy animals. How anyone can openly cheer for them when they make a 4 year old give a soldier head while making the parents watch should be given the slowest death possible. I would start by cutting all their fingers and toes off one by one then sticking the nubs in salt. Then I would do the same with his dick and stick it in his mouth so he can suck it himself. Then finally when the time came I would either let the parents of the girl he raped have the pleasure of killing him or I would tie him to 2 trucks pulling in opposite directions until it tore his sorry arse in half. Nothing is too harsh for someone that is ok with raping and hurting children, old people or innocent civilians that can’t fight back. That’s the work of a pussy who can’t do those things to someone his own size so he gets joy out of hurting the weak. No mercy whatsoever should be given.

I understand it’s not our job and actions from us have much wider consequences, but reading shite like this my mind has a knee jerk reaction to want these mfers wiped from the planet.

A Ukrainian member of parliament, Nardepka Lyudmila Marchenko, accepted a $5300 bribe to give a drafted man an exit permit that would allow him to leave the country.
When investigators approached her house, she ran to get the money and throw it over her fence, unaware that she was already on camera.
Update:
I didn't realize that she was in Zelensky's political party -- they have now kicked her out.
Another fun fact: she was head of the parliamentary ethics subcommittee.

Looks like Russians are smashing the Ukrainians near Kreminna heading towards Torske.
Hopefully the UKEs can mount a counter offensive.

Ethics in Ukraine are about as loose a Vegas hooker's snatch at sunrise. Which is still better than ethics in Russia though.
