Those supplies were now in jeopardy, and they could not defeat China without them (I don’t think they could have defeated China with them either, tbh).

My argument: if Japan didn’t have to worry about embargoes from Western nations, they wouldn’t have needed to attack western colonies to get access to those resources.

Except they had plans to attack those colonies before any embargoes were put in place. Please read that carefully. Before 1938, the Japanese had designs on all of Southeast Asia and saw conflict with the US as inevitable. Read that again slowly to yourself.
