Key Takeaways
Russian forces conducted another series of drone and missile strikes against Ukraine on the night of May 13 to 14.
Increasingly regular series of Russian drone and missile strikes are likely a part of a new Russian air campaign in Ukraine aimed at degrading Ukrainian abilities to conduct counteroffensive offensive operations in the near term.
Ukrainian forces continued counterattacking around Bakhmut on May 14.
The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) is attempting to distract from recent Ukrainian successes near Bakhmut by praising Russian defensive efforts against the Ukrainian counterattacks.
Former Russian officer and ardent nationalist Igor Girkin’s newly formed “Club of Angry Patriots” is continuing efforts to expand its presence and influence public discourse.
Russian forces conducted ground attacks northeast of Kupyansk and along the Kupyansk-Svatove line.
Russian forces have not made additional confirmed gains in or around Bakhmut and continued limited offensive operations on the Avdiivka-Donetsk City line.
Russian forces continued to fire on areas west of Hulyaipole in southern Ukraine.
Russian forces continue efforts to replenish manpower losses using prisoners.
Russian officials and occupation authorities continue to prepare for the September 2023 elections in occupied territories.

Does Russia have the combat power available to send into Belarus ?
Let's be honest if you have seen the training/demonstration videos released by Belarus of their special operations soldiers Russia should send their national gymnastics team to fight them.
If you haven't seen any of the many videos of their training here is one that includes my favorite battle drill: the flaming jump rope. In the US Army it is the super secret Infantry Battle Drill #15, so secret we never practice it nor do we ever use it in battle unless confronting the dreaded Iraqi Double Dutch Brigade.

I see your point, but would argue this has further emboldened Polands security policy which greatly strengthens their security. They have expanded their armed forces significantly, have paid for plans to vastly upgrade their equipment, have been diligent about their borders with Belarus and Kalingrad, I think have greatly strengthened ties with us, the Baltics, and Ukraine. Have seen Finland and Sweden ascend to NATO which gives them more influence as Finland, in particular, understands the Russian threat as they do.
All things the same, yes this has damaged their security, but they’ve done an excellent job of eliminating the “all things the same” part.
Putin had hordes of Syrian refugees show up at Poland's border with Belarus several years ago. They didn't walk through all the other nations just to arrive at Poland.
A fence was built.

Yep. Poland and Hungary, if memory serves me well, we’re the two biggest opposers of the Syrian refugees.

We're now on D+5 of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, which was predictably launched into the Bakhmut flanks after Prigozhin spent months losing his mind on social media.
The modest gains shown have cost multiple AFU brigades and thousands of casualties to achieve.

Really? In the past five days?

Wow. Prigozhin secretly met with Ukrainian intelligence in Africa and offered to sell out other Russian units if Ukraine allowed him to take Bakhmut.

Wagner chief offered to give Russian troop locations to Ukraine, leak says
quote:
In late January, with his mercenary forces dying by the thousands in a fight for the ruined city of Bakhmut, Wagner Group owner Yevgeniy Prigozhin made Ukraine an extraordinary offer.
Prigozhin said that if Ukraine’s commanders withdrew their soldiers from the area around Bakhmut, he would give Kyiv information on Russian troop positions, which Ukraine could use to attack them. Prigozhin conveyed the proposal to his contacts in Ukraine’s military intelligence directorate, with whom he has maintained secret communications during the course of the war, according to previously unreported U.S. intelligence documents leaked on the group-chat platform Discord.
quote:
Two Ukrainian officials confirmed that Prigozhin has spoken several times to the Ukrainian intelligence directorate, known as HUR. One official said that Prigozhin extended the offer regarding Bakhmut more than once, but that Kyiv rejected it because officials don’t trust Prigozhin and thought his proposals could have been disingenuous.
A U.S. official also cautioned that there are similar doubts in Washington about Prigozhin’s intentions. The Ukrainian and U.S. officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information.
quote:
Against that tense backdrop, Prigohzin has carried on a secret relationship with Ukrainian intelligence that, in addition to phone calls, includes in-person meetings with HUR officers in an unspecified country in Africa, one document states. Wagner forces provide security to several governments on the continent.
quote:
According to one document, Prigozhin told a Ukrainian intelligence officer that the Russian military was struggling with ammunition supplies. He advised Ukrainian forces to push forward with an assault on the border of Crimea, which Russia has illegally annexed, while Russian troop morale was low. The report also referred to other intelligence noting that Prigozhin was aware of plummeting morale among Wagner forces and that some of his fighters had balked at orders to deploy in the Bakhmut area under heavy fire, for fear of suffering more casualties.
The Kremlin did not respond to a request for comment about Prigozhin’s communications with Ukraine.
quote:
When informed that U.S. intelligence documents revealed Prigozhin’s communications with Ukrainian intelligence, the mercenary commander appeared to make light of the situation. “Yes of course I can confirm this information, we have nothing to hide from the foreign special services. Budanov and I are still in Africa,” Prigohzin wrote on Sunday via his Telegram channel.

I don’t know how one truly determines whether someone in this situation is genuine or not, but I don’t think I’d have trusted Prigozhin’s word either, particularly with what Bakhmut became to mean to both sides. Seems like it was just a ploy to achieve the desperately needed moral victory for both Prigoozhin and Russia.

Wonder what his PMC underlings will think once they find out?

Hell I guess we just make an offer to Wagner to switch sides, seems like they hate the Russian military more than the Ukrainians.

No way you could trust it. You would always have to worry that he would twist back on you. But with the way things are going, I wonder if he would entertain an offer to disband his company and turn over equipment in return for asylum. As wealthy as he is, he has to be getting mildly concerned about what his post war life will look like.

I'm surprised he's still above ground with all the public chirping he's done at Putin and the MoD. I know he isn't your everyday Russian, but people don't last very long when they start criticizing the Putin and his military out in the open.
As far as whether the claims in the article are true or not...who knows. I wouldn't put it past him to double cross either side while he has his eyes to the best future for himself.

If this has any truth to it the moral of Wagner troops in Bakhmut is going to tank. If it comes to that big of a scandal to have Wagner troops pull out of the city the Russians would have no chance at forcing the Ukrainians out again. It would be the biggest loss of the war for Putin. The Russians have attacked for almost a year and still haven’t been able to capture the entire city at the cost of thousands of Russian lives and tens of thousands wounded. It shows when one army is working towards the same objective and the other has different agendas in different areas. I doubt any of this happens but it has the potential to be a devastating blow for Putin. For all Prigozhin’s bullshite Wagner is a much more effective fighting force than most Russian units. Guys have had accidents falling out of windows for far less than the headache he has been for Putin constantly calling his regime out. It shows how much Putin needs Prigozhin that he’s still breathing air.
