I think we are see some initial probing attacks and attacks of opportunity. the buildup to an eentual counter offensive sees to have a larger effect on the russians. they have been hearing and waiting for since the start of the rainy season that Ukraine will start a counter offensive in the spring, that now the are over estimating the size/strength of these smaller attacks.
Russia may be chasing their tails trying to figure out which attacks are probes and which is the eventual attack(s).

That's the excuse. In reality the ANC and the Putin regime are both criminal syndicates. Birds of a feather.
That is what you get when the do gooders supported communists in Rhodesia and South Africa in the 70's. You get the ANC and Mugabe (communist thugs/criminals)
Idiots.

Battle for Bakhmut
situation by the end of May 11, 2023
According to the statements of the military correspondents of PMC "Wagner" and Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Armed Forces of Ukraine hit the flanks of the Russian group of troops in the Bakhmut direction . These areas were transferred to the regular troops by the PMC "Wagner" detachments due to the decrease in the number of assault detachments and the concentration of the "orchestra" on urban battles in Bakhmut itself .
??According to reports from the field, the enemy managed to push through the defense of the RF Armed Forces in the vicinity of Kleshcheevka and Bogdanovka . The loss of positions near Bogdanovka is indirectly confirmed by the evening report of the RF Ministry of Defense, which refers to the hostilities "in the direction" of Malo-Ilyinovka . For convenience, we have shown the distance from the settlement of Malo-Ilyinovka to the front line, according to the Wagner PMC.
??During the fighting in Kleshcheevka , several strongholds were lost, the "fire brigades" from the "orchestra" managed to stop the advance of the enemy.
??The zone of control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the western quarters of Bakhmut has shrunk by another 220 meters: fighting is taking place in one of the three main fortified areas of the enemy, in the "Nest". All three fortified areas are mapped.
??In general, local collapses of the front and a powerful media campaign organized by Prigozhin against the Russian Ministry of Defense will most likely have to be reacted to. Perhaps in the coming days we will see the activation of the actions of the RF Armed Forces in the Bakhmut direction.

Very much this, this is certainly the start of intensifying the psychological aspect of the counter offensive. Russia has shown a weakness when it comes to communication and command, exploting this is a key part to disrupting their morale and will play a fundamental aspect in a collapse at the front.
I would even argue the Storm Shadow announcement is predicated on getting them looking in that direction as well. Spread their attention as thinly as possible before dropping the hammer.
I hope it is decisive and brings this terrible period for both Ukraine and Russia to a close and wakes the Russian people up from their apathy.

Attack is obviously coming soon enough. Right now they are clearly probing Russian lines and looking for weaknesses but also watching the responses probably even more.

Rolling back Russian troops with localized attacks in the Bakhmut area is absolutely designed to focus Russian attention there. They are already focused there, because they've been focused on Bakhmut for months.
It can prompt more Prigozhin outbursts and hilarity, it demoralizes Russia because they have spent so much in men and materiel to take part of Bakhmut, and it fixes Russian forces even more upon that area, but it also opens the option of a real Ukrainian offensive there if Russia fails to respond.

UA seems to be attacking with forces that are unlikely to be related to the main effort, hence hoping to fix Russian units at Bakhmut and roll back gains over the past few months, while setting the conditions for a major offensive that probably will take place elsewhere.

Who knows, there are other reports out that the offensive is already underway
Exactly. There was an announcement over a week ago by a Ukrainian spokeswoman who said that it had begun already. I think two things are happening. 1. Ukrainians are taking the opportunity to regain the initiative around Bakhmut and 2. There are probing attacks in other areas trying to find a weak spot.

Make note that a lot of Ukraine tweeters are going to fill the information space with a lot of garbage and it is very much purposeful in order to water down any real OPSEC violations. IF this is the beginning it's going to be a wild ride but I wouldn't get excited or depressed about anything that has not proven out over 48 or 72 hours.

If you thought stories about biological laboratories where combat mosquitoes are grown were the height of their idiocy, as it turns out, this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Now the main Russian federal channels are telling that Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki was artificially grown by Americans and infected with the virus of "Russophobia".

ISW update

Key Takeaways
Ukrainian forces likely broke through some Russian lines in localized counterattacks near Bakhmut, prompting responses from Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD).
The deployment of low-quality Russian forces on the flanks around Bakhmut suggests that the Russian MoD has largely abandoned the aim of encircling a significant number of Ukrainian forces there.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine needs more time to launch a counteroffensive because it is waiting for the delivery of promised military aid.
Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov contradicted the pre-war Kremlin justifications for the war by asserting that the Russian “special military operation” began as “a conflict between Russia and Ukraine.”
Unnamed Kremlin sources claimed that Wagner Group Yevgeny Prigozhin’s recent rhetoric is “seriously disturbing the top leadership” of Russia.
The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) denied Ukrainian and US reports that a Patriot missile defense system shot down a Kinzhal missile on the night of May 4.
Russian occupation authorities seized the cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in Simferopol as oppression of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church continues in Russian-occupied Crimea.
Russian forces conducted limited ground attacks northeast of Kupyansk and along the Svatove-Kreminna line.
Ukrainian forces reportedly continued to conduct localized counterattacks around Bakhmut.
Russian forces targeted Ukrainian positions west of Hulyaipole and in Kherson Oblast.
Russia needs to produce over 29 million shells per year to satisfy Wagner Group financier Yevgeny Prigozhin’s demands for Wagner to use 80,000 shells per day – 13 times more than Russia’s pre-invasion annual production rate.
Russian officials continue to threaten and seek to manipulate international humanitarian efforts by threatening to dissolve the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which is set to expire on May 18.

What would the associated barrel burn rate be grinding through 80k shells a day - they are good for about 2000-2500 I thought but with that intensity surely barrel droop would shorten this?
