2.) Is this the longest thread ever?
It isn't even the longest active thread. The whiskey thread on the food board is broken into three parts so I think it currently sits at 3600 or so pages total.
Q was at least twice as long. Katrina was before my time but I have never seen anyone put up a definitive page count.

Use of the corruption indices is objective and not unfair when talking about Ukrainian corruption.
But is also not unfair to note that they are an Eastern European country that was part of the USSR until 1991 and continued to be strong armed by Russia thereafter.
They have made a lot of progress in self gov’t in a short time, but nobody should be surprised they have a baseline near the bottom, where Russia resides on these indices.
Yeah they expose corruption while trying to clean it up and then the usual suspects say, "See! Corruption!"

On the topic of a river crossing in force, check out the start of today's ISW report:
quote:
Russian milbloggers have provided enough geolocated footage and textual reports to confirm that Ukrainian forces have established positions in east (left) bank Kherson Oblast as of April 22 though not at what scale or with what intentions. Geolocated footage published by a Russian milblogger on April 22 shows that Ukrainian forces have established positions on the Dnipro River bank north of Oleshky (7km southwest of Kherson City) and advanced up to the northern outskirts of the settlement on the E97 highway, as well as west of Dachi (10km south of Kherson City).[1] This footage also indicates that Russian forces may not control islands in the Kinka and Chaika rivers less than half a kilometer north of the geolocated Ukrainian positions near the Antonivsky Bridge. Russian milbloggers claimed on April 20 and 22 that Ukrainian forces have maintained positions in east bank Kherson Oblast for weeks, established stable supply lines to these positions, and regularly conduct sorties in the area—all indicating a lack of Russian control over the area.[2] Another milblogger’s battle map claimed that Russian forces do not control some Dnipro River delta islands southwest of Kherson City as of April 22, suggesting possible Ukrainian advances on these islands.[3] Some milbloggers complained that the slow rate of Russian artillery fire due to the over-centralization of the Russian military command allowed Ukrainian forces to land on the east bank.[4] Russian forces may be prioritizing maintaining defenses in urban areas such as Oleshky and Nova Kakhovka, leaving the islands in the Dnipro River delta unmanned. The extent and intent of these Ukrainian positions remain unclear, as does Ukraine’s ability and willingness to maintain sustained positions in this area. ISW is recoding territory on the east bank of the Dnipro River to Ukrainian-held only now because this is the first time ISW has observed reliable geolocated imagery of Ukrainian positions on the east bank along with multi-sourced Russian reports of an enduring Ukrainian presence there.

This sounds significant. Bridgehead on the “Russian side “ of the D River?

Ukraine has been making river crossings for sometime now, not to stay.
BTW, the report of them attempting to take the nuke plant was bogus

Interesting, Defmon had something about this a couple of days ago but dismissed it as fantasy but perhaps there is more to it - within his thread there were several replies of claiming to show various reports backing up that Ukraine has actually made headway there.

So before people go crazy. No there is no cross-Dnipro offensive. There is no bridge head. There are scattered reports of UA forces having positions on the left bank of the Dnipro. This has happened since they liberated Kherson. It's a roadless swamp.
The only way to get in and out of the area is with boats. You can possibly walk too, but there are no roads. It's gonna look like roads when you check google, but they are animated to enhance paths you can travel.
This is the same as when people claimed Ukraine had a bridgehead months ago. Complete garbage.

Definitely the case. High ground is on the liberated side, low ground everywhere on the east sThe ide below the dam.
Ukraine has crossed more than once but to a thin strip at the shore of the river, as well as roaming freely on the Kinburn Spit at the mouth of the river.

@NOELreports:
At the least, though, we can say that these "recon" troops on the left bank could be paving the way for a major crossing.
quote:
I really want to nuance this. Taking up and actually controlling positions requires much more than infantry units that (temporarily or not, because that cannot be deduced from the footage) were seen on the left bank. This just looks like reconnaissance operations where Ukraine takes advantage of less Russian presence.

INTELLIGENCE UPDATE
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 23 April 2023
The Russian MoD has launched a major new drive for volunteer recruits. A pervasive campaign has seen advertising appear on Russian social media sites, on billboards, and on TV.
The new adverts appeal to potential recruits' masculine pride, appealing for 'real men, as well as highlighting the financial benefits of joining up.
Since its access to prisoner recruitment was stopped, the Wagner Group private military company is also competing for the limited pool of Russian fighting-age men. It remains highly unlikely that the campaign will attract the MoD's reported target of 400,000 volunteers. The authorities are almost certainly seeking to delay any new, overt mandatory mobilisation for as long as possible to minimise domestic dissent.

A useful map from MilitaryLand.net:
I do not understand why some people are saying that this is nothing. True, it is not a real bridgehead by any means, but it enables Ukraine to put real pressure on the town of Oleshky, which has been reported to have only a low Russian presence (due to Ukrainian artillery).
And if Oleshky were controlled, then Ukraine would control a large enough area around the destroyed bridge to put up a pontoon bridge, just as the Russians did when they abandoned Kherson city.
This isn't even fully about further advances as part of the counteroffensive. It's in large part about the Ukrainian need to stop the constant shelling of the city of Kherson.
To people saying that there are better places to cross the Dnipro, I would say that Ukraine has at least three pontoon systems -- a crossing here does not preclude others elsewhere.

Confirmed that Russia has captured the Railway station in West Bakhmut. They now control ~90% of the city.
