ISW Update

quote:

Western, Ukrainian, and Russian sources continue to indicate that Russia is preparing for an imminent offensive, supporting ISW’s assessment that an offensive in the coming months is the most likely course of action (MLCOA).[1] NATO Secretary Jens Stoltenberg stated on January 30 that there are no indications that Russia is preparing to negotiate for peace and that all indicators point to the opposite.[2] Stoltenberg noted that Russia may mobilize upwards of 200,000 personnel and is continuing to acquire weapons and ammunition through increased domestic production and partnerships with authoritarian states such as Iran and North Korea.[3] Stoltenberg emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin retains his maximalist goals in Ukraine.

Russia and Iran continued efforts to deepen economic ties. NOTE: This item appeared in the Critical Threats Project (CTP)’s January 30 Iran Crisis Update. Iranian state media reported that Iran and Russia established direct financial communication channels between Iranian banks and more than 800 Russian banks on January 29.[9] Iranian Central Bank Deputy Governor Mohsen Karami announced that Iranian and Russian banks have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on financial messaging, effective immediately. Karami added that Iranian banks abroad were also included in the MoU and would be able to exchange standard banking messages with Russian banks.[10] Iranian officials and state-affiliated media outlets framed the MoU as a means to circumvent Western sanctions on Iran and Russia and compared the messaging system to the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), which serves as the world’s largest financial messaging system.[11] ISW has previously reported on the deepening of economic and military ties between Tehran and Moscow.[12]

Key Takeaways

Iranian state media reported that Iran and Russia established direct financial communication channels between Iranian banks and more than 800 Russian banks on January 29.

Russian forces continued to conduct ground attacks across the Donetsk Oblast front line.

Russian forces continued to make marginal territorial gains near Bakhmut.

Russian forces did not conduct any confirmed ground attacks in Zaporizhia Oblast.

The Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) continued measures to professionalize the Russian military as it faces continued backlash against these measures.

British Defence Intelligence
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 31 January 2023
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE

In the last three days, Russia has likely developed its probing attacks around the towns of Pavlivka and Vuhledar into a more concerted assault.

The settlements lie 50km south-west of Donetsk city, and Russia previously used the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade in an unsuccessful assault on the same area in November 2022. Elements of the 155th are again involved as part of an at least brigade sized force which has likely advanced several hundred metres beyond the small Kashlahach River which marked the front line for several months.

Russian commanders are likely aiming to develop a new axis of advance into Ukrainian-held Donetsk Oblast, and to divert Ukrainian forces from the heavily contested Bakhmut sector. There is a realistic possibility that Russia will continue to make local gains in the sector. However, it is unlikely that Russia has sufficient uncommitted troops in the area to achieve an operationally significant breakthrough.

From a story in the Washington Post about Gen. Budanov (head of Ukrainian military intelligence):

quote:

He is so confident in his intelligence that he occasionally opens a folder to give exact figures — “approximately 326,000 Russian forces” fighting in Ukraine now or that Russia has just 9 percent of its stock of Kalibr long-range missiles left.

Yeah I saw some higher profile accounts sharing this in agreement yesterday. Meanwhile I watched video of 1914 trench warfare happening in 2023 Ukraine on Twitter while eating my breakfast this morning.

UK will not send fighter jets to Ukraine, Rishi Sunak says

The Times

quote:

Downing Street has joined the US in ruling out sending fighter jets to Ukraine after the Kremlin warned it would escalate the conflict.

As the Ukrainian government pleaded with European countries for jets to bolster the fight against Russia, Rishi Sunak said that Britain’s fighter aircraft were too complicated to provide rapid help.

The prime minister’s official spokesman said: “The UK’s Typhoon and F35 fighter jets are extremely sophisticated and take months to learn how to fly. Given that, we believe it is not practical to send those jets into Ukraine.

“We will continue to provide and accelerate our military support to Ukraine and listen carefully to their requests.

“It is the length of time it takes to learn how to use what are very complex pieces of equipment that is the limiting factor in this case but we will explore what more we can do to support Ukraine.”

I do find it interesting that Ukraine has never said that it wanted Eurofighter Typhoons. We talked a while back about how the UK is scheduled to retire Tranche 1 of these jets, but it seems that Ukraine is more interested in F-16s, Gripens, and Mirage jets.

Turkey is certainly not a democracy these days, and so it no longer meets the criteria for NATO membership, but we can't kick them out now, because they are in such a critical position in this war.

Agreed.

They are simply using any lever possible to hold out for the best deal for them to buy their agreement to approve the two States to join NATO.

They mad about no F-35s. But that's what we told them would happen when they bought the S-400 system from Russia. Now, they can't even get F-16s, so they really mad.

France to donate 12 more Caesar guns to Ukraine
France will give 12 additional Caesar guns to Ukraine and send 150 soldiers to Poland to train 600 Ukrainians per month and train a total of 2,000 Ukrainian soldiers by the summer, announced the Minister for the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu.

It was embarrassing for Denmark to give Ukraine one more French-made Caesar than France herself had given. So, they had to give more.

#Russia left without road construction, municipal and other construction equipments because of the supply sanctions against the country.

Only a small number of companies in Russia produce such equipment and in insufficient quantities.

After the start of the war against Ukraine, most factories with localized production stopped the production of its equipment. In particular, Caterpillar, Hitachi, John Deere and others have suspended their activities.

Hard to imagine a situation where #Bakhmut is defendable following the fall of Ivanivske. Russian forces have a long way to go before that happens, but the trend is clear.

Heavy attention is needed on the Klishchiivka - Ivanivske corridor this week.

Ukrainian positions closer to Ivanivske are heavily fortified and will not be easy to overrun: especially given the terrain gradient.

He's been predicting the imminent fall of Ukraine since last February. He's been consistently wrong about everything. He's been vocally pro Russia for years, even before the war. I suspect he's on Russia's payroll

He was removed by some west point board by Biden. He was also earlier blocked from some ambassador or advisor role by the dems. Like many people today he seems to revel in being anti (the other party). So if being anti Biden is pro Putin then so be it.

I thought he must be bought by the Kremlin until I read up on his background.
