At the risk of sounding like goldennugget, it’s almost like western media has intentionally sought out stories to fit a specific narrative.
I mean, there is propaganda in every war.

At the end of the day, Russia will ‘win’
But really, they lose.
They may take control of Ukraine for a time. But even taking this action has cut their own dick off.
They are now a castrated lamb to the rest of the world and Ukraine will be independent again before Russia regains world power.

they're probably going to force Russia to use thermobaric weapons and inflect an absurdly high civilian casualty rate.
Possible but unlikely as a high % of Ukrainians are Russian in some manner and that’s an asset to Putin. Putin would be better off retreating and trying another time than doing that.

Russia was the only country to basically cock slap the Ottoman Empire more than Mia Khalifa during her peak. Turkey hates Russia lol.

Kiev’s mayor says the city is surrounded and that the evacuation of civilians is no longer possible.

Mayor of Kyiv Klitchko reports that Kyiv is now surrounded making further evacuation of civilians impossible
Kyiv is the size of Chicago. They may have taken up positions on all sides but they couldn't surround it if they used every troop in theatre, any more than we could completely surround Baghdad. Main routes blocked, sure. But people and supplies can still get in and out.

How would the US feel of China were trying to get Mexico to join a defensive military treaty?
Thoughts?

Part of me just can’t shake the feeling that things aren’t going totally well for Ukraine.
Well, could that be because that is the reality?
I've stayed out of the pissing match in here regarding propaganda, Ukranian spin/positivity, etc., but the reality is that Russia will in all likelihood "win" this war. Ukraine will fight now, as they should, and continue fighting an insurgent war for some time. That doesn't mean they are "winning".
The goal and rallying call for all watching from the sidelines should be celebrating any suffering Ukraine can dole out to the Russian troops, and tracking Putin's ultimate decisions and actions at home and the reverberations it has across Europe and the world.
Ukraine, as the world has known it, is most likely lost. That doesn't mean on the larger scale that this cannot be a win for everyone else in regards to Russia on the world stage.
Make. Them. Suffer.

Almost surprised he said that as it doesn't fit the narrative most of the media is pushing.

they are already to Kyiv? frick.
They've been in Kyiv. Fighting in the Western part of the city has been going on for a few days now. The news is that they have surrounded Kyiv.
The story, though, is that if the Ukranians keep fighting, this will be a brutal urban combat war that will see high casualty rates for both sides.
ETA: It is why Putin has done what Russia always does in battle: even as "talks" have started, he is choosing to ramp up the siege of major cities. It is leverage, even if it sacrifices any good faith Russia may have.

for context, what is the population of Kyiv?
2.8 million according to Google.

Tell me you don’t understand logistics without telling me you don’t understand logistics. With the main routes blocked, you can get a trickle of supplies into the city and a trickle of refugees out, but no more.

Metro is 3.6 million which may be the more appropriate number.

This seems more coordinated than usual, but maybe I’m just paying closer attention.
