If Ukraine gave them Crimea, Russians left their annexed territories and an UN led, controlled, and monitored vote of self determination happened in those territories, and Ukraine was immediately admitted into at least the EU with a path to NATO membership, that would be something that I think would be a fair compromise to everyone

The civilians that have been killed, run off(refugees) ,filtered and disappeared in those areas, do they get a vote?

In a mailout sent to Eurasia Group subscribers, Ian Bremmer wrote that Tesla CEO Musk told him that Putin was “prepared to negotiate,” but only if Crimea remained Russian, if Ukraine accepted a form of permanent neutrality, and Ukraine recognised Russia’s annexation of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

I think that alone will pretty much ensure that those territories will vote to go back to Ukraine. Russia treating these people so poorly has pretty much ruined their chance of keeping them permanently

It would need to have a major monitoring though by basically every single international agency possible

Elon is afraid that the war will hurt the global economy. For him to say that he is pro-Ukraine is meaningless. He just wants the war over.

Also, I've read that Elon is afraid of Russia attacking his satellites.

I would also assume it would be next to impossible to monitor and guarantee legitimacy

I remember Austria was going to vote as to whether or not they would become part of Germany, but before the election Hitler rushed in troops because he was about to lose.

What kind of election would they have in the conquered territories if the conquerors were still there with rifles snd machine guns?

Which is why in this hypothetical peace treaty. Russia would have to leave to allow the UN to come in.

Im not naive enough to think thats something theyd ever agree to. Just putting forth something that would present an off ramp for this thing that mostly gives both sides something they want

Either way, in the real world, Ukraine is probably going go have to take the annexed territories back before something can be worked out

Putin would add some real celebrity to exile row in Dubai. Wouldn’t be the first Russian to enjoy a schwarma after all this.

Those are counted as votes against annexation.

The issue is Surovikin has been part of the Ukraine war since the beginning and, to be very generous, he's had at most limited success. After the initial assault his forces have made small advancements in some areas and have suffered stunning reversals in others.

This isn't the first "miracle" general that the Russians have appointed that will surely turn the tide. They've had a few that were appointed with great fanfare, putzed around for a bit, and then were quietly sacked. Or killed/captured by the Ukrainians.

The issue is that the Ukrainians want something which is by necessity a multi-party arrangement, which is security guarantees. They've been explicit about that aspect from the build-up of Russian troops onwards. That makes Russian demands of continued Ukrainian neutrality moot, because there is no way to satisfy either party's core demands at all.

Given Medvedev's comments today, it is clear that the Russian elite still believes that Ukraine is a threat, and thus, there is no peace plan on offer, just a long-term ceasefire. That is the geopolitical reality.

Just seeing if anyone has different numbers but looks lime Russia launched 83 missles yesterday but only 28 today.

In curious if the sharp drop-off is from stockpile issues or something else. I'm leaning towards something else just don't know what it would be.

This pundit on Russian state TV gives some insight into their cruise missile stockpiles. It sounds like they don't have a lot just sitting.
