He really did. Now he's forced himself into a position where he'd presumably have to trade away parts of what he's just said are parts of mother Russia that must be defended. And of course nothing in the newly-occupied Crimea is any more rightfully Russia's than these newly seized territories and if anything the new annexation makes Crimea look even less legit. Hopefully cooler heads in Russia will take him out before he does something stupid.

Zelensky: Ukraine applies for fast-track NATO accession
September 30, 2022 5:19 pm
In a video address on Sept. 30, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine has applied for NATO membership. The country, according to him, can count on the NATO fast-track accession.
"De facto, we have already become a NATO ally. We trust each other, we help each other, and we protect each other. This is the Alliance," Zelensky said. "Today Ukraine submits an application to make this de jure. (Our accession) would be a formal solidifying of the real state of things we've already achieved."
In his speech, Zelensky said that Ukraine is ready for peace talks with Russia but with a different Russian president.

At less than 10 sq. Miles that’s got to be uncomfortably tight.

Setting off a justified nuclear retaliation that not even China would have the balls to stand with Putin on is a surefire way to NOT stay in power much longer imo.
Hell, as sycophantic as his close network is, I suspect he’d be taken out internally before that were to happen.
Putin is certainly decoupled from reality at this point, but I don’t think he’s suicidal

No way NATO approves them right now

The entire Russian mobilization looks like enlistment scenes from Stripes. But whereas America has a wealth of Sargent Hulka’s to turn a group of misfits into a fighting force, Russia’s version of this story is pure tragedy.

I'm really starting to wonder if this conflict will indeed go global.

Maybe it will just be a link to the FAFO graph.

From that perspective, this is undoubtedly the most dangerous phase of the war to date.

Right. But throwing a hail mary to try and make the west think he would go nuclear, so that they stand down could be his only chance to retain power. Not saying this is whats going on, but at least its not suicidal like an actual nuclear conflict would be. I don't know what cards he has left to play to remain in power honestly. I think his regime's obituary has been written with this gross miscalculation.

Who else outside of the region really wants to ramp things up?
It won't be China so we can scratch them off the list.

Biden should really be making this response from Kyiv. And the statement should include F-16s, Leopard 2 tanks, Bradley Fighting Vehicles, ATACMS, and a promise to level Russian military installations if nuclear weapons are used.
Also, it should include a complete ban on trade with Russia and pressure on other nations to cut economic ties.

If so, it will be Russia against the rest of the globe. They are holding a losing hand, and everyone knows it. After today, even China and India can't remain friends anymore.
Edit: OK, they'll probably have Iran.

I’d be interested to know just how many of our boomers are lurking near Russian waters right now.

I really don't think anyone wants it to ramp up.
The US and NATO's response to the annexation has the potential to escalate the situation. Providing ATACMS or other advanced systems would be an escalation.
There is an old cold war term that is appropriate here: Brinkmanship.
