British Defence Intelligence
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 22 September 2022
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE

On 21 September 2022, Russia's Putin announced a 'partial mobilisation' to support operations in Ukraine. Russian Defence Minister Shoigu later confirmed this would involve the mobilisation of 300,000 reservist troops.

Russia is likely to struggle with the logistical and administrative challenges of even mustering the 300,000 personnel. It will probably attempt to stand up new formations with many of these troops, which are unlikely to be combat effective for months.

Even this limited mobilisation is likely to be highly unpopular with parts of the Russian population. Putin is accepting considerable political risk in the hope of generating much needed combat power. The move is effectively an admission that Russia has exhausted its supply of willing volunteers to fight in Ukraine.

Unmodernized tanks without ERA or APS that will be crewed and protected by untrained conscripts. Meanwhile the opponent has modernizes soviet tanks and soldiers with 7 months of battlefield experience and reserves with months of NATO training. What could possibly go wrong?

Cue the next smoking disaster. If Russia wants to reverse its misfortunes they need to only recruit non smokers.

Yes, I agree, no one gets along with the Saudis. However, the political pressure that would be generated by the prospect of a replacement for both Nord Stream pipelines would be effective in getting bin Salman to play nice. It would not only add a nice income stream but also give him a lot of future leverage with the EU and US. Taking the opposite tack would be stupid. And dangerous...

Kremlin denies reports that Russia may draft up to one million reservists to war in Ukraine

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has refuted the report of Novaya Gazeta. Europe which said that the hidden article of Russia’s mobilisation order allows the Defence Ministry to draft up to one million reservists into the army. His response was published by state news agency RIA Novosti.

A source in the Kremlin earlier relayed this information to Novaya Gazeta. Europe.

“They changed the number several times, and finally stopped at one million,” the source clarified.

Yesterday, the official legal information portal published a scan of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s order that declared a “partial mobilisation” in Russia. Article seven was marked “for internal use only”. Later, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that the hidden article included the number of Russian citizens that would be drafted into the army.

“The only thing I can say is that [Russian Defence Minister] Sergei Shoigu said in his interview: 300,000 people. The article mentions the number of up to 300,000 people,” he explained.

I think that is only partially true. What you say is certainly true to an extent when it comes to weapons deliveries, as the Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, and Baltics have all given sacrificially to the Ukrainian cause.

But there's simply no way for those nations to lead in terms of sanctions, because they are comparatively poor, with much smaller economies than France, Germany, and Italy.

And those three nations initially wanted nothing to do with sanctions against Russia -- certainly not the severe sanctions that now exist. Certainly not the nearly substantial disconnect of Russia energy and the sky-high energy prices that have been the result.

That only happened because of Biden's leadership.

And there's been lots of US leadership militarily. The Rammstein conferences, for example. And the Eastern European countries, while making valuable contributions, aren't providing HIMARS and HARM. Their weapons are not game-changers. Ukraine's success or failure in this war has always been dependent on American leadership.

And at a deeper level, I would say that the Eastern European countries aren't even leading when it comes to weapons deliveries.

The only reason that they can give Ukraine the weapons that they are giving is that the US guaranteed that Russia would lose this war.

Without that US leadership, Poland wouldn't give Ukraine all its Krabs, because, if Russia were to win in Ukraine, Poland would need those KRABs to protect their own sovereignty.

American leadership is why they can give what they are giving.

Saudi Arabia is finally developing its own tight shale natural gas formations which are enormous. The sand used as proppant has to be imported. Windblown sand doesn't work, must be river sand deposits.

You’ve got to admit that with Blinken putting Russia on blast at the UN - and calling out their smokescreen moves before they invaded - that was leadership.
