Thanks for providing 2 more examples of Biden following instead of leading.

I don't think that you and I disagree all that much. I do think that the US should have supported Ukraine with more equipment and sooner.

But you aren't making the point that you think you are when you say that the US got Romania and Bulgaria to start their 152mm production lines in June. It was only the US that could do it. You are not providing an example of Biden "following" anything, but leading. If Boris was "leading," then why didn't he get Romania and Bulgaria to restart those lines.

I think that Biden has been too cautious, but I understand why he has been cautious, and, ultimately, US leadership is helping Ukraine win the war.

Biden still refused to supply Poland with F16s so it turned to South Korea.

It's not like there are a bunch of unneeded F-16s in storage. We can't even get them to Taiwan until 2026. Poland has the F-16s that it has, and there wasn't an easy way to get them more. Poland also has orders for 32 F-35s, that I think get delivered in 2024.

Poland is making a sizable increase in its military capabilities, and buying from South Korea is a great way for them to do that quickly. It's not that we don't want to sell to Poland or that they don't want to buy from the US.

Pipelines are cheaper than LNG tankers and multiple pipelines are cheaper than one. Even the Germans have learned that lesson now. Add LNG tanker gas from the US to a pipeline from the Gulf fields added to a separate pipeline from the fracking gas fields of Western Saudia Arabia,

Any natural gas from the Persian Gulf needs to be LNG. A pipeline from the Persian Gulf requires friendly and stable governments in Iraq and Syria and Turkey. Since Turkey and the EU have chilly relations and Syria and Iraq are far from stable that is a nonstarter. The proposed pipelines from Israel to the EU which western SA gas would feed into via Egypt, all run through Turkey or Turkish waters and then to Greece. Since Israel and Turkey have on-off relations and Turkey and Greece have a terrible relationship that is not the best prospect either. LNG is more expensive, but it offers flexibility in case of a diplomatic dispute or government instability. Also pipelines just make Europe a slave to the whims of Turkey instead of Russia. The pros of LNG offset its cost and it’s faster. Europe could replace Russian gas with LNG by 2024 instead of 2030 with pipelines.

Weapons deliveries are too late, and the sanctions are too weak for anyone to say with a straight face that Biden is leading. Biden is reacting and following.

I look forward to all your post in this thread, but your Biden hate is coming off cringe in regards to this particular conflict. America is clearly leading.

I think the Biden Administration is one of the worst, if not the worst, we've ever had. That said, their handling of the war has been decent. I think that's the only thing I've seen them do that I agree with.

To agree and expand on what some others have said, our biggest mistake thus seems to have been too little support early in the war, but had Russia been truly capable of rolling over Ukraine, that would've been a reasonable call. Where we seem to have fallen down was in our assessment of the relative strengths of these militaries and the respective societies and governments and whoever it is in the IC and/or US military needs to correct that going forward.

I have been seeing numerous reports of the Russians pulling people off the street and conscripting them into the army. Any fighting age males arrested for protesting share the same fate.

This is my favorite. Three Russian guys went to counter-protest the anti-war protest. 2 of them end up getting forcibly conscripted right there. Video in link, translation follows.

But wait I support the war effort

Good! come with us then…

But I mean I am here supporting Putin..

Great! This way…

Im trying to say that I am on your side!

Then why are you resisting? Get in the bus

But I’m for the war …

GIRL. Do you realize what a bad idea it is to conscript a bunch of people committed to opposing the war? ??

Yeah, Russias war is finished

ETA: Would it not SUCK to be going to the grocery store and be kidnapped off the streets to go fight in Ukraine. Do these people being forcibly conscripted have any chance to get their affairs in order or say goodbye to their families? It's hard for me to wrap my head around.

It looks like they're trying to do close to full mobilization from places they think can get away with it like Buryatia, Dagestan, and Yakutsk and partial mobilization in places like Moscow & St. Petersburg where they think they can't.

There are also a lot of reports that the mobilization order was for 1M and not the 300K they have said publically.

You really feel bad for the Russians being forced to enlist. I worry about post Putin Russia being unstable and don't see how this doesn't backfire on Vlad (end up with him out of power).

Ugly situation for ordinary Russians

Secret laws for conscripting millions now? Would love to see facts behind this. If so, they really have gone down the totalitarian toilet.

Kiev fired some generals for failing to perform their duties early on. It is believed that Kherson offered very little resistance during the initial days.

Whether they were collaborators or just scared is insignificant, because the end result and decision making was the same.

So a bit of caution is understandable.

Video of a Russian Ka-52 being shot down by a MANPAD today (supposedly)

#Ukraine: A Russian Ka-52 attack helicopter was shot down today in #Zaporizhzhia Oblast by the Ukrainian National Guard, apparently using a 9K38 Igla MANPADS.

It manages to land, whilst burning heavily- whilst the crew may have survived, the airframe will not.
