Russia's Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, who is speaking now, has given the first official Russian casualty figure since March.

He says 5,937 Russian soldiers have died in Ukraine, up from 1,351 Russia's last official update on March 25.

Western intelligence agencies say they believe the true number of Russian soldiers killed in action is far higher.

According to Shoigu, "the losses of Ukraine are more than 100,000; 61,000 of them are dead".

Apparently Ukraine has also lost half of its army

So Russia is claiming almost a 10:1 kill ratio...I mean they couldn't give more believable numbers?

Or this guy says it better

quote:

What's really interesting about this is that Russian propagandists have been pushing the excuse that the reason Ukraine have had success is they've had a force of 500,000 in the east. Now Russia claims that 100,000 is half of Ukraine's military. Which is it?

It's interesting to me that they are still using the SMO nomenclature and avoiding calling it a war despite having to mobilize

British Defence Intelligence
UPDATE ON UKRAINE 21 September 2022
INTELLIGENCE UPDATE

On 20 September 2022, officials from Ukraine's Russian-occupied Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions announced they will conduct referendums on accession to the Russian Federation. These referendums follow the Russian Duma's formal recognition of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics on 21 February 2022. This urgency is likely driven by fears of imminent Ukrainian attack and an expectation of greater security after formally becoming part of Russia.

Russian forces in Ukraine continue to experience personnel shortages. The Russia Duma voted on 20 September 2022 to amend a law which extends punishments for defaulting troops. This is likely intended to limit the number of desertions and refusals and thereby to mitigate some of the immediate pressures.

The Russian civilian and military leadership has faced significant pressure over the last two weeks. These new measures have highly likely been brought forwards due to public criticism and mark a further development in Russia's strategy. Putin is accepting greater political risk by undermining the fiction that Russia is neither in a war nor a national crisis in the hope of generating more combat power.

So Russia is currently outnumbered by over 500,000 troops in Ukraine and its response is to call up 300,000 troops? Another half measure from the Kremlin.

What is OMLandshark going to do now that Tucker is proven to be an idiot?

I think that the correct view of the partial mobilization is that Putin knew most of the contract soldiers whose contract end is coming up would be quitting, rather than freeze to death in a trench in Ukraine this winter.

The most important part of all this is that, as of today, contract soldiers can't quit when their contracts are up. That's going to be bad for morale, but it'll keep soldiers with training and experience from quitting.

It will also generate some new soldiers who can do basic things. It takes a lot less time to train a soldier to defend than it does to attack. And it doesn't take a long time to train people to be cooks and truck drivers.

So, if anyone is thinking that this will now give Putin the force that he needs to finish taking the Donbas, then he's an idiot, but this will help Putin to continue to mount a defense to protect the pretended "Novorossiya."

In other words, Putin is doing enough to try to lose slowly, instead of quickly and dramatically.

It honestly doesn't make sense seeing as Ukraine has already attacked Crimea and Belgorod

There are already videos of Russians showing up. Of course it is only a few people but the Russians are acting like it's a mass turnout. They showed the same dude at least 4 times.

That’s probably a good read on the situation. These are supposedly going to be individuals that have already been in the military, but based on what I have read about the quality of their training for conscripts, that’s not much help.

Nonetheless, it would probably benefit Ukraine to make what territorial gains they can before the end of the year.
