I've always been a believer that if for these petty revenue tickets that these dirty cops be handing out, if everyone could take it to a jury trial it would clog up the courts so badly that they would have to cut back on these bs tickets. Like not stopping at a 3 way or 4 way stop when no one is around, or now these petty speeding cameras in school zones. Or better yet, if people were to say I'd take my jail time instead of paying the fine as well. I've seen where the courts would give jail time on the weekend so these people wouldn't lose their jobs (not sure what the dets were on these situations but when in for jury duty and heard the judge give out some of these sentencings, where they come in on the weekend to serve). The justice system and cops are suppose to serve the people, not act as a separate entity that just extorts the people for revenue.

What percent of charged DWIs go to trial now? I have no idea. I’m legitimately asking.

Would you expect that to change appreciably?

Oh look. Attorneys, who charge by the hour, wrote and passed a law mandating they get to charge more hours. Whoopsie Daisy!

Not as many attorneys in the leg anymore because they can’t make as much money goofing off in Baton Rouge for 3 months a year plus a special legislative session. Can make much more billing from their offices

Dumb take. A fart in the wind is now worthy of a jury trial thanks to recent tort reform.

Signed by Gov. Jeff Landry last month, HB403 increases penalties to a level that, according to defense attorneys, triggers a defendant’s constitutional right to a jury trial

I guess I’m not understanding why this is bad?

It seems like even less people in this thread understand what they’re bitching about.

Criminal cases are almost exclusively charged as a flat fee. This bill was an incompetency fubar by the legislature.

Idc if it's .2

If the guy passed the field sobriety tests and the only cause was the smell of alcohol... Eat ten dicks cop.

I called them on a guy the othwr night stuggling to keep it between the trees on i10. Dude stopped. Chugged a 24 ounce beer and stumbled in to buy more alcohol at the gas station.

Cops ignored it claiming they had no one close

Passed one sleeping in his unit 1500 feet away.

fricking up insurance was intentional. This governor might be deeper in the pockets of the trial lawyers than DumbBel was.

A new Louisiana law aimed at raising fines for misdemeanor DWIs could have an unexpected consequence: flooding courtrooms with jury trials.

We should put all these jury trials on youtube so people can watch online, give likes subscribe. Louisiana gov could make money from that and that could help pay fornthe trials.

Also another channel should show prison life for the drunks for post conviction. More revenue for the state.

God forbid I want to try to avoid having my driver’s license confiscated. My car getting towed at my expense, and criminal charges placed on my driving and criminal record. Plus this:
quote:

License revocation
Ignition interlock device
Jail term
Probation
Community service hours
Substance abuse assessment and treatment
Drug and alcohol education classes
Fines and court costs
SR-22 auto insurance coverage

There are other consequences when you have a DUI conviction, even if it is a misdemeanor offense. You’re responsible for all fees and costs associated with your sentence, such as installing and maintaining an IID, paying for your restricted license, and fees for education and treatment. A DUI impacts your auto insurance rates significantly.

A DUI conviction can prevent you from obtaining some professional licenses and even exclude you from jobs. A conviction can interfere with college or university funding. It may bar you from qualifying for some housing.
