Pre-trial diversion programs as well. Those are a cash cow for multiple parties.

Both the documented and undocumented varieties, guaranteed.

Even that isn’t accurate. The illicit market is still very much around in states that have legalized adult use.
Really? People want the low-grade trash that bad?

A huge amount of money in these programs. From "counselors" to shrinks. It is a complete racket.

The legal stuff is obviously higher quality but much more expensive.
As an example, most places do not allow sale of a single pre-roll, which averages about $15. But you have to buy at least 3. And that’s about the cheapest thing on the menu.
So you are spending at minimum $45 every time you go into a dispensary.
Also, and this may surprise some of you, but people under 21 still want to buy weed too.

Alabama says hold my beer. We don't even have lottery yet.
Hell, I wasn't able to buy beer on Sundays within about a 30 mile radius of my house on Sundays until like 2 years ago. Still can't buy liquor on Sundays.

asset forfeiture
Louisiana civil forfeiture law fails to protect property owners. The law requires only that the government show by a preponderance of the evidence that property is associated with criminal activity in order to forfeit it. ... Law enforcement retains 80 percent of forfeiture revenue—a large incentive to seize.
And how many weed arrests result in this? I know this board hates some assest forfeiture but it is rarely done on the local level as it is a lot of legwork. You mainly see it on the federal level so don't act like local departments are getting 10k per weed arrest
OT weed dealing ballers don't have to worry unless they are keeping their stash directly next to their proceeds. Otherwise, the police have to prove the money or assets came from weed sales.

Excuse my ignorance, but I’m assuming a pre-roll is a joint or blunt?

$45 for three fricking joints/blunts?! That’s shitty. I can go into the liquor store right now, buy a decent bottle of bourbon and drink on that for a week or two.
Three pre-rolled joints/blunts may last me three days.

Talked to a buddy who is in the know on this. He says the Sheriffs want to tie a major raise in their state payment for inmates in their jails to approval for recreational MJ. Until they get their money they will fight the bill. Without their support it won't pass. So it won't pass this time, then a behind the doors deal will get cut to give them a huge piece of the revenue and then they will "allow" it to pass. Sheriffs really do run shite in LA.

I hope it passes so you people will STFU about it.

Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. It’s a joint that is already rolled for you so all you have to do is light it.

The cost of bureaucracy.
And now you understand why the illicit market still accounts for something like 70% of sales here. And why I’m trying my hand at home growing (also legal)

If this bill passes, Street weed would still be illegal from what I gather as that would constitute black market sales. Cops could still make those arrests. That only lasts so long though as people become accustomed to the legit market and pricing gets more competitive.

The state’s sheriffs, who enjoy huge influence at the State Capitol, are asking lawmakers to vote “no” on Rep. Richard Nelson’s House Bill 699, which would legalize the drug for recreational use by adults over 21. They claim the measure, which has shown surprising viability, is rushed and ignores the downsides of legalization other states have experienced.
Statist scum

yes, street weed is still widely available in states where weed is legal simply because its so much cheaper
there is a black market for cigarettes, so this will always be a thing as long as these markets are so heavily regulated

On radio I heard it's worth $200 MILLION a year, plus whatever savings come from less prosecution / jail time.

On Saturday, the Louisiana Republican Party, which rarely wades into legislative issues, issued a "call to action" urging people to contact their lawmakers to get them to vote down the bill.
What reason would the state sheriff’s association have for lobbying against this besides being corrupt bastards? They must really enjoy ruining young adult’s lives over this petty bullshite and not looking into stuff that actually matters. And no surprise to see the La GOP get behind this nonsense. Bunch of old of our touch bums who manage to be on the wrong side of pretty much every issue.
