Proponents and opponents of legalizing recreational marijuana are both mounting a furious last-minute lobbying effort ahead of a potentially decisive vote Monday on a bill before Louisiana’s conservative House of Representatives..
The state’s sheriffs, who enjoy huge influence at the State Capitol, are asking lawmakers to vote “no” on Rep. Richard Nelson’s House Bill 699, which would legalize the drug for recreational use by adults over 21. They claim the measure, which has shown surprising viability, is rushed and ignores the downsides of legalization other states have experienced. On Saturday, the Louisiana Republican Party, which rarely wades into legislative issues, issued a "call to action" urging people to contact their lawmakers to get them to vote down the bill.

Louisiana will be the 50th state to legalize. Nevermind that they keep bitiching about money and here is a windfall of money ready to happen

I'll be stunned if they approve it.
I mean, aren't there a few more trannies in this state that they need to worry about first?

The politicians will pass this. They know this is their next BIG payday to funnel monies back to their own pockets.

No more easy money from weed dealer arrests?

The official LA GOP is the most inept organization I’ve ever seen. They can’t get behind a single candidate for an election, which consistently loses us the jungle primary elections outright when GOP voters outnumber Dems. The only things they can get behind are useless crap and things people don’t want. Of course in this case they throw themselves into keeping weed banned. fricking morons. The people running that office are idiots too, barely making by bc they’re not good enough at their jobs to get on real political campaigns or real political organizations

I would think y'all legalize prior to us in Texas.

Everybody wants a piece of the pie. There's still a good bit of powerful people against it unfortunately, regardless of right or wrong. I personally hope it passes and hopefully this opens up more space in prisons for idiotic drug misdemeanors.

Texas is blue enough that the whole blue voter population plus a small amount of moderate red voters will easily push weed through. The Bible Belt Baptists in LA will ensure LA is one of the last to pass legal weed

I'm for legalizing it but explain this. Give me a breakdown of how the police get money from weed arrests. Where it comes from and where it goes.

It’s no wonder that they Sherriffs who enjoy a profit motive here, oppose the bill.
They get paid on the number of rooms they utilize so a higher number of detainees means that they get more money.
Their motive is warped
Remove the various disguised motives and this bill has some wide sweeping support on all sides of the aisle.
The general thought is that it will not ultimately pass in this session but has a strong chance within the next few years as some older reps leave

Even that isn’t accurate. The illicit market is still very much around in states that have legalized adult use.

asset forfeiture
Louisiana civil forfeiture law fails to protect property owners. The law requires only that the government show by a preponderance of the evidence that property is associated with criminal activity in order to forfeit it. ... Law enforcement retains 80 percent of forfeiture revenue—a large incentive to seize.
