Millenials: "There are no reasonably priced starter homes available in the US!"

ETA: I'll be curious to see the same chart for 2020-2030.

Based on median prices, we are 5th. That means 4 more states are doing better than us economically, and has lower home prices.

I read a report a few weeks ago that projected most of the major LA markets to have some of the largest year over year residential real estate declines going into late 2026. NOLA short term rentals are likely propping up the LA market as a whole.

Corruption and poor education have incalculable costs.

Louisiana is investing in education through TOPS but a good chunk of the beneficiaries flee the state after graduation.

other states dealt with natural disasters

Case in point, Texas has had their share of storms. Maybe not Katrina destruction but still damage in the billions of dollars.

Well, the state has zero industry outside of oil and farming, for the most part, and the cities are generally crime-ridden cesspools that are falling apart.

The primary cities (BR, NO, Shreveport, Lafayette) are pretty crappy, especially when compared to other states.

Take my situation as an example.

Healthcare is everywhere. Why would I choose to live in LA when I could have an equal or better paying job in a safer city in a better run state?

Hell, MS got destroyed by Katrina and received nearly zero national attention, unlike LA, yet they came out of it far stronger.

there it is

Also millennials: "I want to live in the best areas of the best cities in the best states at a price that is well below market value".

Those states comprise 1/5 of the entire country.

I'm genuinely curious what jobs that you're looking for are available in Georgia that aren't available in someplace like Michigan, Ohio, or Missouri.

TOPS does nothing to solve the states education problem. Totally unusable public schools is a large part of why educated people who want to raise a family flee as soon as possible.

It's almost like LA voters are a special kind of stupid.

I don't talk politics much with people but the few I have had with locals made me realize how dumb the voters are here. Louisiana's slow performance is self inflicted. Here's some examples:

"I didn't vote."

"I voted for him because his mom taught me in 2nd grade and his dad hunts with my dad."

"Im voting for so in so because he's going to get rid of the woke crap. That's more important than the economy."

"I know his daddy and dem good people."

This

The “personal injury attorney” cabal’s influence can’t be overestimated as a prime factor to retard economic growth and development in Louisiana over the past three decades.

It’s a weird alternative reality lottery system.

It negatively impacts almost every industry and touches each adult in Louisiana.

And it's literally unstoppable in this state. Everyone is bought and paid for. Our only option to get away from it is to move.

Remember that time you were an intern for Mary Landrieu? One of the very families responsible for LA being a "shithole"?
