Kroger Co. hiked prices on milk and eggs more than needed to account for inflation, the company’s top pricing executive testified during a court hearing on the U.S. government’s bid to block the grocery chain’s purchase of rival Albertsons Cos.

quote:

In a March 2024 email to his bosses, Andy Groff, Kroger’s senior director for pricing, acknowledged that the company had raised its prices more than required to adjust for higher costs.

quote:

“On milk and eggs, retail inflation has been significantly higher than cost inflation,” Groff wrote.

quote:

Groff testified about his email as part of a federal antitrust lawsuit by the Federal Trade Commission and a group of states to block Kroger from buying the Albertsons chain. U.S. District Judge Adrienne Nelson in Portland is expected to rule on whether to stop the $24.6 billion acquisition from moving forward.

I'm not a fan of these giant companies consolidating.

However, Kroger can charge whatever the frick it wants for eggs and milk.

This price gouging nonsense is idiotic. Either the government money printing causes inflation or EVERY SINGLE SELLER in the country has mysteriously colluded to gouge the consumer 100% bypassing market forces and supply and demand.

In my area the competition for grocery business is fierce. We have local, regional and nation options.

The govt. needs to stay out of the grocery business.

Was this offset by lower prices on other items or by increased costs in other areas? So much info missing.

c on z has his progressive talking points for the day, so he's rolling. Facts have nothing to do with it.

I mean look at the Robert Reich twitter post. Should tell you everything you need to know.

Kroger is our predominant store, and their prices are outrageous. We shop as much as we can at Sams/Costco.

Corporate food companies have made record profits since the beginning of the pandemic.

Seems too many people want to point the finger everywhere except there.

The most shocking thing in the OP is that anyone considers Albertson's to be a rival of Kroger,

It is hilarious to see the useful idiots bleeding from their holes over grocery stores (who have one of the lowest profit margins of any industry) while their government overlords send hundreds of billions to Ukraine and they beat their dicks like goons watching kiddie porn.

Considering what the egg producer Cal-Maine has been going through, it’s the latter here.
