Never been in a helicopter but when I went to Belize after HS we had to take a small 5 seater plane or whatever it was from the mainland to Ambergris Caye where we stayed. That shite was scary.

Once they were in the air and the fog was that heavy, I wonder if he couldn’t see where to land.

I read the pilot was instrument rated so supposedly he's supposed to be able to fly in such situations.

The luxury aircraft was being flown by Ara Zobayan, who, according to records was an instrument-rated pilot

I wonder if he questioned if they should be flying?

ATC had them in a 15 minute holding pattern because of numerous IFR departures. ATC tower communications

Could he not have done a controlled or slow descent? You can pretty much land a helicopter anywhere.

I fly in helicopters all the time for pipeline work and actually landed one in a field next to a Bucee's so an inspector could go take a shite. It's probably not that easy to do in LA but still anything is better than crashing.

If this bystander video is correct, looks like a mec
that can't be the incident. The heli they were in was black. That one appeared to be light colored.

sure this is an extremely ignorant question. but if the weather was that bad why take off? why not land and wait it out? instead of circling and taking some weird flight path?

Should not have flown or should have returned to the airport..

But people feel pressure (or just arrogance) to beat mother nature in aircraft all the time.

If this bystander video is correct, looks like a mechanical failure... as it is free falling, not smacking into the side of the mountain!

That is not a video of Kobe’s helicopter. That video is from the Middle East.

Did he regularly use a helicopter just to travel across town?
Yep. Used to take a chopper to/from practices and home games. Dude was rich enough to say frick LA traffic and had a private helicopter for his commute.

They weren't grounded at John Wayne so all we can do is speculate.

Seems like 160knots was a little excessive given the weather.

There's no way that's accurate
