I think we did it right. Bunch of families got together and formed a team to give our kids more reps and make our all star teams better. Added bonus was get kids ready for HS ball. Played 3-4 tourneys in the fall and 3-4 tourneys in the summers (max). Mostly Houston area tourneys so no hotels and that sort of bullshite. Played from 9u to 12u - mostly AA and AAA (but played all the sweat shop teams like Banditos etc.). Most of the kids ended up playing on competitive Houston HS teams. 4 went D1(A&M, Vandy, Harvard, Houston Baptist), 2 went D3. All four D1 guys spent time in minors - AAA was top division they attained. One still in minors although he is out with TJ....not sure he's going back though - Harvard grad with lots of opportunity outside baseball.
all of them out of baseball are on to successful careers.

i have boys, sure they need to be a kid but they should be pushed to be the best they can be.
I think the difference here is how you measure "being the best they can be". Could I sign my 4 year old up for a math tutor and spend countless hours in order for her to be the best mathematician that she could possibly be? Sure, I guess, but what's the point? At the end of the day, I don't want my child to live a life where she has to feel stressed or anxious about trying to be perfect. I want her to be a kid. I want her to have a childhood, I don't want ridiculous pressure on her constantly. I just don't think that's healthy.

are you under the impression the DR kids are kids they found playing stick ball in the streets at 15?

Actually they are discovered at the ages of 12-13
If they haven’t made it to one of the 30 MLB compounds in the DR by the time they are 15 they are sent back to the ghetto

This whole thread is pathetic.

So by age 12 the raw talent is unmistakable and all the "extra reps" and games played after that won't make a kid a professional prospect?

yall should see what baseball is like in the DR and Japan. 4+ hours a day minimum of training.
That’s essentially a trade school type thing. In the DR, what the frick else are these kids gonna do? They aren’t surfing the internet for memes or scrolling TikTok. Pretty simple…if you want off the island, you need to be a ballplayer. They have a tad more pressure on them than a suburban kid whose parents are trying to into a star.

That’s pretty much how it works down there.
Google “MLB Dominican Republic”

I feel like it’s the moms who really fuel this
Agree. It’s the moms that post the road pics on the way to the 6th World Series of the year and yet another championship ring. I don’t think it’s good for the kids physically or mentally to be playing one sport most of the year. Same with competitive cheering.

Travel ball is a billion dollar industry and the more ball your kids play the more equipment that needs to be bought.
I asked ChatGPT how many kids, a year, play travel ball. It says there is little data available to answer this because travel teams are managed by independent organizations, but showed me some numbers from National Council of Youth Sports estimate there are 3.8 million kids between 6 and 18 that play baseball annually. Another source says roughly 2.3 million kids played travel ball in 2023.
Everyone of those kids need gloves, batting gloves, at least one bat, cleats. Then think about all the baseballs that are used. You have batting cages, people hire people to give their kids hitting lessons, coaches get paid to coach travel teams, the parks are that hold tournaments are making money hand over fist. Parents have to pay what? Around $10 every time they go to a game?
And for all the money parents dish out, what is the return? A lot of those kids are not going to even play HS.. Then there are only so many who play HS that will go on to play any level of college ball. Unlike a sport like football, baseball, basketball... Its international.
Is there any data that shows travel ball is more beneficial? What exactly is the goal of playing travel ball? School ball starts pretty early right? 5th grade? (I guess it depends on the school).
People who have something to gain from travel ball has been able to convince a lot of people that their kids will benefit from playing travel ball.

If you have a kid who is a great athlete and loves baseball you are a bad father if you keep him in rec ball. Period
How is that for a curveball? Imagine having a kid with potential and love for the game and you keep him in rec ball so you can go pound more beers and be lazy at 30a and sound cool on the internet
Now if your kid doesn’t love it or isn’t a great athlete and you force it on them you also suck as a parent.
This is a dumb take. Travel ball before puberty doesn't matter. And I coach travel bawl

Disney created something that seems to become a scam (not all of Disney), but timeshares for example. I know someone who had a timeshare to Disney years ago. Upfront you get to go there X amount of times a year and you get x amount of "free" meals, etc but its really.. You can go x amount of times IF available. I know it was more than 2 times a year, but the first year he had it, he and his family went twice and then for the next four years (I think it was for 5 years) they ended up going maybe 3 times.
So if its a package that is priced to allow you to go there 3 times a year a family would have to go 15 times in 5 years to get their moneys worth. No one is going 15 times in 5 years (if there are its not many people at all). I don't get Disney at all. I went when I was in 3rd grade. The only thing I remember is that Epcot was my favorite part of it and I liked the botanical gardens we went to more than Disney.
But if that's what people really enjoy doing then more power to them. How many parents actually enjoy going to tournaments every weekend. It might be cool at first, but some of these kids are spending most of their childhood playing in tournaments every weekend, etc
