Dachshund is actually German for "Douche Hound."

A basset hound is a better choice. Very good with kids.

Good is they are ugly and it's funny to look at them.

Bad they are ugly and it gets annoying looking at them after a while.

Had one for 12 yrs. One of the most popular dogs of all time. They are very loyal but also can be stubborn. Ours didnt bark for like 6 yrs then I guess when he figured he had gotten old enough he started barking at everything.

RIP Mikey!

We have a few long haired mini dachshunds. Their temperament is way better than the short hair. Way more chill.

Great dogs till they get older, then they start having back issues.

They’re great dogs but have pretty fragile backs. Something to consider with young kids.

My sister (no pics, was a Homecoming Queen) had a miniature Dachshund for around 15 years.

It was a beautiful dog.

It was spawned in the bowels of hell.

Hated most everyone other than her immediate family.

When it finally had the good form to die, no tears were shed.

Avoid.

Pain in the azz as puppy. Small bladders. Get them fixed as soon as possible and it will calm them down. At age 2 they start to mellow out. After that pretty good, fun dog.

Good friend of my wife's had a female red dachshund that lived to 14. She was the sweetest dog you can imagine, and I don't know that I ever heard her bark.

She loved anyone she met, but I think she would occasionally do the nervous pee thing around strangers. Not sure if that is typical.

We've always had them. Fun dogs to have. Not in every case but if they're never allowed to jump off couches, their backs usually hold up well.

They don't even have to be older. Back issues, often significant, are a major problem with the breed. Consider insurance as injury that requires surgery is a real concern, and it is not cheap.
They are stubborn pups, but with a bit of effort and patience they can be great pets. Some do not like children, particularly those outside the family. If you get them acclimated to children at an early age, it is not too much a problem.
