quote:

Eliud Kipchoge had brushed aside his pacemakers. The Kenyan pointed to and waved at adoring galleries, 15 deep in the middle of a Vienna park, as he galloped towards athletic immortality. “That was the best moment in my life,” said Kipchoge of catching sight of the finish line. When he crossed it, the clock read 1:59:40.2. Amid inevitable, wide-ranging assessment of what this all means, at least this can be defined as a reference point for decades and generations to come.

An amazing feat of athleticism.

Basically the last milestone in competitive running. The fact that humans can run such a distance in so small a window of time is staggering to me.

That’s very impressive but I’ve always wondered...

Is it actually healthy or good for your body to put it through that much work and stress like that ?

A very small percentage of the people on this planet could run a mile in 4 1/2 minutes. This guy did 26.2 in a row. Unfathomable.

Most extreme feats of athleticism are not “healthy”. That’s also not the point.

Honestly, we might as well have just let him do it on a treadmill, if we're just gonna manipulate as many conditions as possible.

I probably can’t run 1 5 minute mile, let alone 26 in a row.

A 4:34 a mile pace for 26.2 miles?

I'd have to train the rest of my life to get one mile in under 5 minutes and may never achieve it

I’m struggling to lower my 5k time to that level and this dude does a full marathon that way. Unbelievable.

Closest I ever got to that mark was 5 minutes and 19 seconds. If I had had better shoes I might have been sub-5 minutes that day. I had to slow down because of a giant blister that had formed on the sole of my foot. Before that happened, I was in the lead.

The Guardian article linked above is a far better job of reporting than the ESPN one (not linked because it would be a waste of your time.)

That he had a laser projection to follow so he wouldn't slow down makes me smile, but it also bothers me a lot (as would the guys who ran with him to keep his pace where it needed to be.

What bothers me even more was the course: mostly straight, mostly flat and essentially windless.

Aren't there some other field events (open field events) that require some wind just to be real?

Meh, dude on here trained up for a 5K. Got a bunch of shite talked to him. Did it in under the time he lied to the girl about and got the girl.

That’s the real world application that gets me pysched.

I don’t see the problem regarding conditions. T and F events often have asterisked records for wind aided records, etc. Of course the fastest times happen in the most favorable conditions and course. There’s no way around that.

Edit: this record was not wind aided though. They just made sure wind was not a detriment.

Just keep at it. Before you know it, you’ll be running 5k’s in less than 2 hours too.

frick that mealy mouthed whiny arse "but, but, but" bullshite.

Where were all the other world class marathoners running a sub 2 hour marathon in the same conditions?

Give the man the credit he earned for the superhuman accomplishment he achieved.

I"m equally impressed as I'm mildly bothered by the "rigging" of his race. He did it, no denying, but it would be 10X the excitement and achievement if a marathon runner could finish a sub two hour marathon in a regular sanctioned marathon, like Boston.

Disclaimer: this is being said by me, who my best marathon time is 4 hours and 29 minutes
