. I believe the prior world record holder could have run this time with the set up done for this guy.

You understand this isn't considered a world record. They broke too many of the required rules for it to be a world record. And the same guy, kipchoge, is already the world record holder at 2:01:38 But Kenenisa Bekele of ethiopia just came with 2 seconds of world record a couple of weeks ago.

That’s insanely fast.

I can’t imagine how much he already hurts though.

After pushing himself that hard, you know he hurts

The Guardian article linked above is a far better job of reporting than the ESPN one (not linked because it would be a waste of your time.)

That he had a laser projection to follow so he wouldn't slow down makes me smile, but it also bothers me a lot (as would the guys who ran with him to keep his pace where it needed to be.

What bothers me even more was the course: mostly straight, mostly flat and essentially windless.

Aren't there some other field events (open field events) that require some wind just to be real?

It’s not being counted as a record, he did it just to show a sub 2 hour was possible. It in no way breaks the record he currently holds at 2:01 and change.

I"m equally impressed as I'm mildly bothered by the "rigging" of his race. He did it, no denying, but it would be 10X the excitement and achievement if a marathon runner could finish a sub two hour marathon in a regular sanctioned marathon, like Boston.

This was about as close to a vacuum that you can get in an outdoor event that spans 26.2 miles. This event is obviously intended to simply give him the opportunity to do it. Still really impressive though

I don't understand why people are pointing at the variables this guy used to make his run easier. It's obviously not going to count as a record and he knew that before he ran the marathon. The whole purpose of this event was to prove that it was possible for humans to run a sub-2hr marathon. He proved that. Sooner or later, someone will make it official.

An amazing feat of chemistry

Nike’s main running coach just got busted for doping and EK is highly tied to Nike.
Africans have been doping it up for decades, as well as Eastern Europeans and Caribbeans. Several USA stars too. The great Carl Lewis was doping. Ironic and freakishly hypocritical after his hissy fit over the Ben Johnson scandal, after Johnson won the 100 in 1988.

Jamaica is one of the worst offenders. Their performance at the last Olympics made a mockery of the sport. It's sad, because I ran track and my family has been involved with the AAU and USOC for a long time, but it feels kind of ridiculous and pointless now.
