When you are exerting that much energy yes. Have you ever wrestled or done juijitsu? Or shite just watched MMA. Hell I had 3 a days for soccer in August. Probably did the equivalent of 20-25 miles a day. Our ball girls were constantly driving the gator back and forth and replacing empty water coolers with fresh cold ones. This was just to cool down cause in Mississippi it's 110 degree heat index. 10 minute drills then hydrate for 2 minutes then rotate to different drill station. That was at lunch. Mornings were 5 mile runs. Evenings were scrimmage 45-60 minute scrimmages depending on how hard we went at lunch and the weather. If it was raining we were out there longer.

Was he cutting weight? I was a wrestler in HS and had a couple guys who got pretty fricked up cutting too much weight. I think they do hydration testing and body fat testing now to prevent exactly this kind of thing from happening, but from what I hear now they just cut a few lbs under the target weight, rehydrate to the target weight, and scam the tests, which is arguably worse than not being tested at all.

The article is weird. It keeps saying "cops say" or "the police say" these horrible things happened, but no charges were filed.

Can coaches defend themselves by saying, "We weren't physically withholding the water. A 20 year old man can quit the team and get him a drink at any time."?

that would have made it worse, and this was in the 70s

Is this where we pretend no one ever died in a similar manner back in our day?

I was in HS in the 80s - I don't recall any of this no water stuff back then - mb I just forgot. I do remember running a shite-ton.

In the early/mid 80s we would get shite for asking for water breaks but they always gave them to us.

The OP situation is also in stark contrast to the military. I know some of you were assembled around a Lyster bag and were made to empty your canteen. They knew full well the issues with heat injuries and knew that with every heat injury a person sustains they become more susceptible.

I coach young cyclists and I spend a lot of time teaching them about proper hydration and nutrition while training and racing. I often get in newbies that when they learn to properly drink and eat during a ride their times drop dramatically as a result.

That was the way it was at football practice in the 60s, 70s, every coach had this attitude. The one thing you did not do was complain. It was totally wrong, but if you wanted to play a sport that was the coaching mentality of that era.

Interesting logic you got there.

You said the kid was a pussy because he died. You quoted a post stating 5x as many kids died in youth sports back in your day, and then you responded by stating kids were tougher back in your day.

Yeah, if that wad my kid, I'd wait years if I had to and eventually kidnap that fricking coach....not give him any water for days, and then drop him in the middle of scorching hot desert. frick that guy, one way or another he'd be dead.

I want to make that coach sit in a hot car without water for a couple hours and tell him no every time he asks for water or to get out.

Couldn’t get no water. He died of the dehydration.

I’d pay money to watch the assholes calling this guy a pussy do an Ironman without being given a water break.

God knows those fat arse internet tough guys couldn’t make it 5k without vomiting

Imagine calling a kid a pussy after he’s dead from heatstroke. That’s rich.

My brother wrestled D2 and I have attended a few practices. I have never seen anything like it. They don't stop.

I wrestled in high school but was no where near the level to wrestle in college. My assumption after seeing the headline was that he died trying to cut weight before a meet. We used to do insane and risky stuff to cut weight. But the article describes something entirely different and possibly criminal, like negligent homicide.

I didn’t post the stat, don’t know if it’s accurate, also said I’m not saying that the way coaches did it back then was the right way, obviously it’s not, I’ve raised three kids that are all grown and played all the sports, unequivocally, my generation was/is mentally and physically tougher than any generation I’ve seen since ETA: how would fatalities factor into this? tougher back then, more deaths, more pampering today, less deaths? that’s a good thing
