My guess is that for political and sensational reasons the focus was on New Orleans

Honestly, I think New Orleans was at the center just because most people across the country have heard of New Orleans before. The town I grew up in was devastated and wasn’t named in national coverage either.

Let's not forget Rita. Lake Charles and SWLA have been behind the 8-ball the last twenty years when it comes to devastating storms.

The white people were the ones abandoned for the longest. South of New Orleans.

The gov't help was horrible. The army would drive in to New Orleans and then drive out leaving everyone and not taking anyone with them.

They made the disaster as bad as they possible could. You can believe that it was incompetence. I don't buy that excuse.

No. Louisiana was its second point of landfall after Florida and then Mississippi was the third point of landfall.

My username is a tribute to those in Mississippi that we're forgotten. The Weather channel, in more than one occasion, referred to my fellow Mississippians as "the landmass between Mobile and New Orleans."

Mississippi buckled our boots and said frick waiting for anyone else. We will take care of ourselves.

It was incredible but we were recording surface temperatures of 97 degrees in this whole area and all the fish were below 200 feet and wouldn’t come into this bathwater.
I was surf fishing the weekend before Katrina in the Biloxi marsh and off the south spit of Cat Island. (about 9 days before landfall) RIP Conservation Camp building

The water was stupid hot.

In some ways it seems like last year and in other ways like it happened to another person.

I’m glad I was in my early 40s then.

I couldn’t do what I had to do then now.

But yes New Orleans was not in the eye and should have made it out with much less damage almost no deaths if not foe the Levees breaking.

Just because it could have been even worse is not a basis for saying it should have had less damage. The design parameters for the levees were still exceeded. And the massive size of the storm meant Lake Pontchartrain saw storm surges over 20 foot.

NOLA native here. My SO and I spent a lot of time on the MS Gulf Coast prior to the storm. After we were finally allowed back in the city, our first trip away was to check on things at the coast. I recall driving to the base of the old BSL bridge and looking into utter darkness across the bay. Since then, we try to include some memorializing when we visit the coast. We’ve been to the Ground Zero Museum in Waveland, and to the Ohr Museum exhibit for the 10th anniversary, and to both the Camille and the Katrina monuments in Biloxi. This week we will attend another memorial event in Harrison county. I have always found the exclusive media focus on New Orleans’ aftermath to be self-serving, and wished that the MS Gulf Coast got the attention it deserves. But your fellow Gulf Coasters know what y’all endured, and we respect the hell out of you people. Y’all are a mighty example to the rest of us.

Actually New Orleans being on the “good” side of the storm is what hurt. Strong winds out of the north pushed all that lake water into the canals.

The August 29th storms of Katrina, Gustav, and Ida have taught me a lesson. There are no good sides to a storm.

Being near the path of all three of them, I have seen the devastation each has caused and the potential inept leadership of those in office to manage the aftermath. Luckily, I live and work in an area where this isn’t too much of an issue.

It flatted houses from Bay St Louis to Pascagoula and as far north as Laurel in significant numbers.

Get off your fricking high horse . Half the houses along the MS coast that got wiped out were Nola residents’ weekend homes.

I grew up hearing about hurricane Camille and the devastation it laid on Mississippi and Louisiana. Being an actual cat 5 upon landfall. Unlike Katrina. .

Everyone may have been better off if Katrina had stayed a 5. Weakening the way it did right before landfall caused a nearly worst case scenario.

But it didn't make landfall in MS as per the OP's claim. LA is bigger than NOLA.
