Why is New Orleans so anti barricade? We had them in mobile for 20+ years. Sure people didn’t like them at first but the alternative is much much worse?

Im hearing this guy was a rider that hopped off of his float. Barricades wouldn't have prevented anything here.

It was not a rider.
BTW anyone who says barricades are more dangerous is out of there mind. I attend parades that have both and barricaded areas are infinitely more safe. Not even close.

Before this week the incident rate was zero vs zero for decades straight

Yea I don’t believe he was pushed. That video shows the crowd really wasn’t that thick right there, especially compared to some of the crowd videos the riders showed me last night. From what I heard the guy slipped on something and fell under. Shouldn’t have been that close to the float.

I haven’t read the definitive story of what happened here, but I read the articles about the Nyx fatality where it says she was trying to cross over between floats to say hello to a rider she knew.

Cross over
Between tandem trailers
Something that can start moving at any moment

That’s terminal stupidity. You can put barricades, walls, flashing lights, or whatever you want up, but you will never guard against terminal stupidity. Stupidity always finds a way.

He was running along side almost like he was heading towards a rider he knew and slips and falls in just the wrong place at the wrong time you see him then you don't. Sad situation but this doesn't seem to be Darwin or drunkin stupidity. Sad thing however

And I just watched the news and Jesus's the police sup is really a moron. Man New Orleans is in trouble. I find it funny this guys is going to assess anything. How can the police "ban" tandem floats

Just stop

The “running man” in the video is running to the float driver to tell them to stop. You see him run out of the frame on the right if you look carefully I missed it several times but it’s clear as day. By the time he is exiting the gram the corner two riders on the second float are already pointing and motioning to the ground and police officer that something is wrong.

This one is a little clearer. Pause it at 19 seconds then slow mo it through the 20 second mark.

Does anyone know how he ended up under the float? That person who runs by next to the float isn’t the person who gets hit.

Yeah the running person isn’t who got hit. You can see that person run out of the video at the same time the guys on the float are yelling for the police.

He 100% was not a rider, he wasn’t even wearing a costume so not sure how anyone could confuse it. I saw several people saying he slipped on beads going for a throw and just fell under the wheel

quote:

One witness said the man jumped as he tried to catch a light-up throw, then landed on more beads and slipped under the float

Noticed something today in the Twitter vid that I missed last night. If you go to the 10 second mark you see someone run forward towards the front float to pick up a throw on the ground and I can't see that person ever pop up again in the video. Then as the rear float comes in the riders start waving for someone to help. This guy was in the right spot before the float riders started waving and the other guy ran up to stop the float. Could that be the victim?

No that person clears the frame to the right. Next watch, focus on the yellow lights to the right of the shot. You can see the silhouette of his head go by. It's extremely quick.

Why is New Orleans so anti barricade?

barricades create a hard barrier that a crowd behind will surge towards. This is unsafe

without a barricade (and without stupid people) the crowd ebbs and flows creating space and a safer crowd

using St Charles as an example, the crowds is able to move freely side to side and back and forth, relieving hot spots when people can get pushed, trampled or similar

with a barricade that can’t happen
