$1 million is cheaper than the bad publicity even if the accusations are false. That's the only reason they offered the $1 million. Not because it has merit, even though we all wish it did

This apparently was a counter offer after Rana demanded $20MM.

My guess is that JPM had no idea how much of the story might be true and opted to hedge by throwing $1M at him to make him go away.

Had they done even a little digging they would have seen this guy was a fraud, but even “a little digging” is going to be expensive for a firm like JPM, so they may have made the best decision they could with the information they had immediately available.

my company has a long history of paying off assholes to avoid negative publicity and shut them the frick up, I've never understood that ideology
