What does the question to that answer have anything to do with the state of our school systems? Also, what good/bad does it do for our students?

You may want to take a step off your high horse.

The Korean War (conflict) ended in 1953 or 54 right?

The result of the war was the division of North and South Korea. Russia was a supporter of the North Koreans. US backed the South.

It was a proxy war just like the Vietnam war. So unless you reworded this question or I am missing something.. The correct answer is North and South Korea.

That is a fair question. I certainly don't actually think that Jeopardy question (and poor answers) accurately sums up everything related to education in this country.

However, I find it quite telling. I though the question was beyond obvious, but based on the incorrect responses here, I guess I was wrong.

Answer me this... if the question had been "Who was President of the United States during the Civil War?" and 2 of 3 teachers got it wrong... at that point could I have passed judgement on what that means?

You do realize there is more than one answer right?

I kindof doubt, given the Mandalay Bay incident, that the Jeopardy dude wants to be remembered as "the Vegas gambler that was killing everyone"

I’m not really sure why a teacher should know about the Cold War more than any other profession

I could see your point if a history teacher didn’t know it, but why a non history teacher?

Ok, so 3rd place lady (maybe mid-40s) has "NATO and USSR".
The dude tied for 1st (mid-30s I guess) answers correctly.
Then the final teacher, lady tied for 1st (maybe late-40s) has "USA and USSR".

The two ladies were the following: middle school music teacher and an elementary school resource teacher. Why would you expect those two to know that

The dude who got it right was a H.S. world history teacher

ETA: I assume you are just trying to be a know it all douche

dude, you are making lame excuses... I am supposed to be impressed that one teacher was aware that the USA and USSR were the main players in the Cold War?

Or that the other teacher knew that NATO was involved in the Cold War? Sorry, not impressed that two ~45 year old teachers don't know that easy answer.

I don’t give a frick if you are impressed or in your moms basemant jacking off on her panties. I also don’t give a frick if a middle school instrumental music teacher or an elementary school resource teacher doesn’t know the answer to mid 20th century history question.

If they teach my elementary school kid resources and when she’s in middle school she is taught to play the cello then they have done their jobs.

I’m guessing you were the dick in every class that no one liked-including the teacher.

I'll answer that. Perhaps you are correct.

Someone in their mid-40s probably spent, what, 12-18 years in the Cold War, and was at least a mid-teenager during the elimination of the Berlin Wall and fall of the Soviet Union? So a pretty big life event.

I could be wrong, but I genuinely thought teachers were curious and paid closer attention to news, current events, etc. than the average person at the grocery store.

I honestly thought the question was beyond obvious, but I will accept that I was mistaken.

Why do you think that a pluralized word gets an apostrophe just because the final letter in the word is a vowel?

Speaking of stupidity, after the recent champion showed a better stragedy to elevate the payout, the current players return to the old less profitable one. ???????

The question as it is in the OP seems to imply that both alliances formed in the mid 50's.

You’ve sorta got a point. NATO was founded in 1949 and the Warsaw Pact in 1955. So technically only one of the two alliances were formed in the mid-50s. But still... you’ve gotta be pretty ignorant about history to not be able to answer the question correctly.

And as for guessing the USSR as one option, that’s especially ignorant considering the Soviet Union was founded in 1922 and was one of the “Big Three” during WWII which ended 10 years before the mid-50s.
