JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — An Ortega couple whose home appraisal came in more than $100,000 below expectations tried an experiment. According to a Facebook post and a story in Tuesday’s New York Times, Abena and Alex Horton sought a second appraisal -- but first, they redecorated their house.
According to Abena Horton's post, "we took down all family pictures containing Black relatives. We took down all pictures of African-American greats that we display to inspire our son. Zora Neale Hurston and Toni Morrison came down from the bookshelves; Shakespeare went up. My son and I took a convenient shopping trip during the appraisal, leaving my white male husband to show the appraiser around, alone."
The second appraisal jumped by 40 percent – going from the initial $330,000 to $465,000
“My heart kind of broke,” Ms. Horton told the Times. “I know what the issue was. And I knew what we needed to do to fix it, because in the Black community, it’s just common knowledge that you take your pictures down when you’re selling the house

Appraisals vary wildly, order another one and it will be totally different

A $135,000 jump is pretty sketchy. I'd be curious to know what the low appraisers other appraisals look like.

Did this stick out to anyone else?

Not that it really matters, but everyone knows to make your house as generic as possible.

Home appraisals are 90% square footage & location.
Nobody gives a shite about furnishings.

These people lie in bed at night and think of Ways to make America sound racist. Those are my thoughts.

Appraised 40% higher, I would've been dancing in the street...
Yeah the story sounds like total BS... I guess the comparisons they used changed as well...

I don't believe you.
Two of my best friends are real estates appraisers. No way this happened.

I’m going to need a copy of both reports before believing this. Did the first report use bad comps for their house? Did the couple bring up the poor comps? Something about this story doesn’t seem plausible.

I'd have let the appraiser piss on my head for 135K

They don’t know how appraisals work. And they are looking for another way to be a victim and garner attention.

Appraisers can wildly vary on a house depending on what they use as comps and how they count certain areas.
An extra room is only worth X while an additional bedroom is worth 4X. Etc.
If they want to blame blackness for the appraisal, then the problem may be that the appraiser was assuming that the area is heavily black and would be having reduced interest as a result.
A house in Capitol Heights which is the same layout and dimensions as one in NBR will be worth far more because people are trying to buy in Capitol Heights while they are trying to escape NBR.

I wonder if their car has large rims. Large rims on cars is horrible for home values.
