It's all about that real estate market. Austin has become a housing bubble just waiting to burst. Louisiana real estate is incredibly over priced. I've done a lot of research on which areas are affordable and can give me the most on what i'm going to pay for a home. Why pay 200-300k to live in a suburb of Lafayette or BR, when I can pay that for a small ranch in those areas? Jackson and Memphis provide enough to do to keep us busy, while also remaining somewhat close to my family in Louisiana.

My wife and I recently moved to NE Jackson in May after 16 years in Dallas. It is no doubt a dump city, but like anywhere it has nice pockets. We both grew up in Shreveport so we had extensive experience in hell hole living so it wasn't a culture shock and East Dallas/Lake Highlands where we relocated from had no shortage of crime or ugly city decay to look at either. Real estate is so stinking cheap compared to Dallas you can live really well and the people I've encountered are really nice and laid back. Job options outside of health care or law are much greater in Memphis though.

I lived in East Memphis (Estate and Park) before making the trek to Collierville. Really miss that area. If I want a decent non-chain restaurant I either have to do Jims Place or drive to your neck of the woods.

Gotta agree with this. I dont know what kind of business the OP is in but Id have no problem moving to Memphis. I'll be damned if I ever moved to Jackson.

Memphis has some problems, but it's a cool town IMO. There's some great areas on the east side. Collierville is a nice suburb as well. I think that Lifetime Fitness in Collierville might be the nicest gym I've ever been to. It was convenient being close to Whole Foods, Sprouts, and a lot of decent BBQ.
Olive Branch and Germantown are also good suburbs. You have to pay Mississippi income taxes in Olive Branch though.
We moved away last year, and I miss Memphis more than I thought I would. The area around Overton Square was dead when we moved there. In just a matter of a year or so, it turned into a really neat little area with a handful of really good restaurants. Cooper Young was also neat but a little more hipster-ish.
Nothing against Jackson, but I think Memphis and its suburbs are on another level entirely. Madison seems to be developing into a nice place though. There's just more Fortune 500 companies based in Memphis than in Louisiana and Mississippi combined. With that comes more jobs, more income, more entertainment, and more opportunity.
